Part VI TUNLAND Airbag

I Working principle of electronic airbag

Detonation process: at the moment of crash, sensor collects crash signal, airbag ECU recognize
and process the signal, ignite gas generator to trigger airbag detonation.

II Airbag system selection
(1) Airbag electronic control unit
Airbag electronic control unit assembly (ECU) controls airbag and seat belts with inter
nal diagnostics.
Two types of pickup truck airbag ECU
 4 ignition loops: each control DAB, PAB and two front pre-tension seat belts
 Single ignition loop: Control DAB module.
 Installation location: ECU assembly is installed on the non-crush area – floor central
channel, but near collision area as close as possible which ensure that signal does no
t distort.
 Power source:
 ECU‘s ignition energy comes from the battery,
 ECU interior got another energy reserve function (4 ignition loops has this function)
to explode DAB, PAB and two front pretighten seat belts when battery is damaged.
 When automobiles collide, a collision signal to the controller, and doors will automat
ically unlock.
Installation requirement:
a) Airbag ECU allowable installation tolerances: perpendicular ± 4 °; parallel ± 2 °.
b) ECU is grounded at floor the resistance should be less than 100m
c) Installation torque of airbag electronic control unit assembling bolts is (9 ± 1) N.m;
d) Resonant frequency of ECU’s installation position should be greater than 500Hz.

(2) Fault indicator

TUNLAND’s airbag fault light (AWL) is used to show passive
safety system status to the driver. AWL should be installed o
n cab instrument panel mask and PCB plate behind it, mean
while, and design Figures (refer to the right figure). After initi
alizing CAN communication, AWL light for 5.5 seconds and t
hen turned off. If stays on it indicates failure. See Annex 1 fo
r details.

(3) Driver airbag module (DAB)

Driver airbag module assembly is composed of folded airbag, gas generator, decorative
cover and metal bracket. DAB and overall shape of steering wheel designed by Fukuda
meet the space requirements of airbag.
(4) Passenger airbag module (PAB)
Front passenger airbag module is composed of folded airbag, gas generator and m
etal bracket.
PAB module structure type: its appearance meets the overall design requirement of
Fukuda interior decoration, the structure is brand-new developed according to its int
ernal reserved space, passenger airbag of TUNLAND is invisible, it is under the das
hboard.
(5) Clock spring assembly
Suppliers and Fukuda coordinate about clock spring installation space, and coordin
ate ignition loop connector of clock spring and DAB module generator, so as to gua
rantee DAB module's self-test and ignition function. Clock spring will often be dama
ged due to rough handling, see Annex 2 for specific installation methods and solutio
ns.
Effectively turns of clock spring: both 3 full turns to left and right. circuits : 16
III Airbag installation:
 Front passenger airbag assembly sequence:
1. Attach passenger airbag to on the back of dashboard body. (With error prevention mecha
nism) surplus space after installation is normal.
2. Plug in airbag connector with dashboard wire harness at the back, when assembling upp
er dashboard, ensure that passenger airbag align with the bracket on round beam.
3. Torque the fix bolts (8 ± 1) N.m through the glove box

 Passenger airbag is detonated pieces, it should be confirmed that no foreign matters insi
de support before packing into the bracket, to prevent injury when it is detonating and bursti
ng out
 It‘s better press airbag into bracket in first place, because it is hard to adjust once it is mis
installed;
 Rough handling of upper dashboard is prohibited when assembling, to prevent passenger
airbag from damage;
 While installing fixed bolts from glove box, installation hole should be equipped with lighti
ng, and bolts alignment and reliable fixing should be guaranteed;
 Passenger airbag is a safety components, connectors must be reliably.
