Application of Zero
● Mathematics: Zero is a fundamental number in mathematics, For example, in arithmetic, zero is used to
represent a quantity of nothing, In algebra, zero is used to represent the root of a polynomial equation.
● Science: Zero is used in science to represent a point of reference or a baseline.
● Computer science: Zero is used in computer science to represent the absence of a value or a condition. For
example, in programming, the value of 0 & value of 1 In binary code, 0 represents the absence of an
electrical signal, while 1 represents the presence of a signal.
● Finance: Zero is also used in financial calculations, such as the net present value of cash flows, where a
present value of zero indicates that the cash flows are equal to the required rate of return.
● Gaming: In games, the term "zero-sum" is used to describe a situation in which one player's gain is another
player's loss. This concept is used in games like chess, poker, and other competitive games.
Modern Zero
● The modern zero was later introduced when zero reached China from India and later
reached the Middle East.
● In around 773 AD, the mathematician Mohammad ibn-Musa al-Khowarizmi worked
on equations that resulted in zero.
● It was al-Khowarizmi who first synthesized Indian arithmetic and showed how the
zero could function in algebraic equation.
● Italian mathematician Fibonacci introduced zero in Europe
● It was named ‘Zefero’ and later in English, it was called ‘Zero’.
