Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the


ability to perceive, control, and evaluate
emotions.

Background
Brief history of Emotional Competence
Inventory (ECI)
• Was used by many philosophers

• Term EI - Coined by Peter Salovey & John Mayers (1990)

• Daniel Goleman - wrote and was very well known for EI (1995)

• The Self-Assessment Questionnaire by Dr. Boyatzis (1991)

• Dr. Boyatzis + Dr. Goleman → developed a pool of items of emotional competencies.

• Goleman (2001) developed the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI)
