COUNTRY PA G E 1

OVERVIEW - SOUTH AFRICA

Located in the southern parts of the African continent, South Africa is bordered

by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini. South Africa entirely

surrounds Lesotho in the east (The Commonwealth, 2017).

South Africa has three major zones: the broad interior plateau, the surrounding

mountainous Great Escarpment, and a narrow belt of the coastal plain. The

country is one of the world’s major producers and exporters of gold, coal,

diamonds, platinum, and vanadium (Britannica, n.d.).

South Africa is known for its varied topography, stunning natural beauty, and

cultural diversity, all of which have contributed to the country’s popularity as a

travel destination since after the apartheid was legally abolished in 1994.
COUNTRY PA G E 1

OVERVIEW - SOUTH AFRICA

With a current population of over 60m citizens, the country covers a

land area of 1,220,813 sq km. with 11 official languages (South

African Government, 2019).

With its market-based economy, South Africa is widely considered the

economic, commercial, and logistics hub of Southern Africa. The

country is one of the largest economies in Africa and has successfully

attracted large venture capital investments with its robust industrial

base. The country remains a leading destination for businesses and

brands looking to expand beyond their borders (Sidebrief Inc., 2022).

RECOMMENDATION - PA G E 1

LEGAL INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS FORM

In respect of the proposed expansion of Africana into South Africa, we hereby recommend Foreign Direct

Investment (FDI) as the international business form and Private Company Limited by Shares as its legal

structure.

An FDI involves the commitment by a foreign investor of substantial financial, capital, and human resources in a

country where it hopes to operate. It is a situation where a company buys or establishes an asset or investment in

another country (InvestSmall, 2020).

By establishing our business as a local Company/Subsidiary, we aim to leverage the talent pool of our new home in

acclimatizing with the culture and sustainably carve out our market share.
POLITICAL FACTORS PA G E 1

ANALYSIS

• South Africa is a parliamentary republic with the president being both the head of state and the head of

government. The country was ruled by an apartheid government in the past. However, a lot of things have

changed since the country’s first fully democratic election in 1994. Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein

respectively are the administrative, legislative, and judicial capitals of the country.

• Before 1994 South Africa runs a parliamentary system of governance where the president is the head of state

and the head of government nominates the vice president and ministers to form a cabinet to administer state

affairs.

• The Country’s political environment is often clouded by corruption, mismanagement, political intolerance, popular

protests, and violence, which often leads to a slowdown in economic development and progress.
