ADAPTAION AND MITIGATION
RESPONDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Mitigation
• Actions to reduce the concentration of GHG in the atmosphere
in order to reduce climate change
 Cutting emissions of greenhouse gases
 Increasing sinks
Adaptation
• Actions that people take in response to or in anticipation of
projected or actual changes in climate
 To reduce adverse impacts
 To take advantage of opportunities
Adaptation and Coping Strategies
HOW IS ADAPTATION DIFFERENT FROM COPING?
COPING
It is important to note that coping is typically a short-term
action during and immediately following a shock.

As with vulnerability and adaptive capacity, coping strategies

vary between different communities and groups within
communities.
ADAPTATION

Adaptation strategies should be designed to build on existing

coping strategies where appropriate.

However, in many cases, the most vulnerable people are

employing coping strategies which are neither effective nor
sustainable.
IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING MEASURES ARE COPING OR ADAPTATION
• Alter fertilizer rates to maintain grain or fruit quality • Restrict consumption by adults in
• Rely on less preferred and less expensive foods order for small children to eat
• Borrow food from a friend or relative • Increase use of climate forecasting
• Purchase food on credit to reduce production risk
• Introduce forest conservation • Collect of wild foods
• Gather wild food, hunt, or harvest immature crops • Reduce number of meals eaten in a
day
• Altering amounts and timing of irrigation and other
water management; Consume seed stock held for • Use of crop varieties and species
next season for increased resistance to heat
shock and drought
• Send children to eat with neighbors
• Skip entire days without eating
• Change the timing or location of cropping
activities • Modification of grazing times
• Diversify income • Plan landscapes to minimize fire
and insect damage
• Send household members to beg
• Sale of assets such as livestock
• Temporary and permanent migration in search of
and agricultural tools
employment,
• Adjusting harvesting schedules.
