SELF – ESTEEM AND LOCUS OF

CONTROL AMONG CAREGIVERS OF


AUTISTIC CHILDREN

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

• Autism is one of the spectrum of behaviorally defined “pervasive

developmental disorder ". (ASD)

• Self-esteem is a positive or negative orientation toward oneself; an

overall evaluation of one's worth or value. People are motivated to

have high self-esteem, and having it indicates positive self-regard,

not egotism.

• While the term locus of control defined as an important aspect of

personality. It refers to an individual’s perception about the

underlying main causes of events in his or her life.


RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

• Through the extensive evidence that the caregivers of children

diagnosed with autism were vulnerable to experiencing mental

health issues including having high risk of depression, anxiety and

family stress.

• These may affect the self -esteem of caregivers of autistic children

and which in turn affect the whole family

• locus of control is one of the variable closely related with self-

esteem. Identifying the locus of control of caregivers of autistic

children and its relation to self -esteem may help to design policies

and intervention strategies for deteriorating mental health.


REVIEW OF LITERARTURE
RESEARCH DESIGN
• The present study follows a non-experimental descriptive research design.

• Descriptive research design is a type of research design that aims to

systematically obtain information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or

population.

• Statistical techniques used for the present study were Correlation,

independent sample‘t’ test and one way ANOVA.

• The correlation was used to find the relationship between self-esteem and

locus of control among caregivers of autistic children.

• The independent sample t test is used to assess the influence of sex on study

variables.
METHOD

• The 40 caregivers of autistic children were identified by snowball sampling

method from various differently abled schools belongs to Calicut district,

Kerala.

• The caregivers of children with autism aged between 5 to 17 were included

in this study. The autistic children with other psychiatric disorders are

excluded from this study.

1. Self -esteem inventory developed by Thomas and Sananda Raj (1985)

2. Locus of control scale developed by Sony and Sananda Raj (1998)

3. Personal data schedule for collecting demographic details


• VARIABLES:

i. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES – GENDER,EDUCATION

QUALIFICATION AND OCCUPATION.

ii. DEPENDENT VARIABLES – LOCUS OF CONTROL AND SELF

– ESTEEM.
