SKILL INDIA OR THE NATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT MISSION OF INDIA IS A CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY PRIME
MINISTER NARENDRA MODI. IT IS MANAGED BY THE NATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OF
INDIA.
MISSION
SKILL INDIA CAMPAIGN WAS LAUNCHED BY PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI ON 15 JULY 2015 TO TRAIN
OVER 30 CRORE PEOPLE IN INDIA IN DIFFERENT SKILLS BY 2022.
SETUP
APR 16, 2022: INDIA’S FIRST SKILL INDIA INTERNATIONAL CENTRE WILL BE SET UP IN BHUBANESWAR FOR
TRAINING YOUTHS WITH AN AIM TO ENHANCE OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE SKILLED WORKFORCE

HERE ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES IN INDIA:

PRADHAN MANTRI KAUSHAL VIKAS YOJANA (PMKVY): LAUNCHED IN 2015, PMKVY AIMS TO PROVIDE SKILL
TRAINING TO OVER 10 MILLION YOUTH IN INDIA BY 2020. UNDER THIS SCHEME, CANDIDATES RECEIVE TRAINING
AND CERTIFICATION IN VARIOUS SECTORS, INCLUDING AGRICULTURE, CONSTRUCTION, HEALTHCARE, AND TEXTILES.

SKILL INDIA MISSION: LAUNCHED IN 2015, THE SKILL INDIA MISSION AIMS TO PROVIDE VOCATIONAL TRAINING TO
OVER 40 CRORE PEOPLE IN INDIA BY 2022. THE SCHEME IS FOCUSED ON CREATING CONVERGENCE BETWEEN
VARIOUS SKILL TRAINING INITIATIVES AND PROVIDING SKILL TRAINING TO YOUTH ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

DEEN DAYAL UPADHYAYA GRAMEEN KAUSHALYA YOJANA (DDU-GKY): LAUNCHED IN 2014, DDU-GKY AIMS TO
PROVIDE MARKET-DRIVEN SKILL TRAINING AND PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO RURAL YOUTH BETWEEN THE AGES
OF 15 AND 35. THE SCHEME FOCUSES ON SECTORS SUCH AS HEALTHCARE, HOSPITALITY, AND TOURISM.

NATIONAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (NSDC): NSDC IS A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP ORGANIZATION


THAT AIMS TO PROMOTE SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA. THE ORGANIZATION WORKS WITH VARIOUS PARTNERS TO
IMPLEMENT SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
THE DESIRED STATUS OF THE SKILL INDIA INITIATIVE IS TO CREATE A WORKFORCE THAT IS JOB-READY AND
GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE, CAPABLE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE COUNTRY'S
ECONOMY.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SKILL INDIA INITIATIVE-
• Bridging the skill gap: The Skill India initiative aims to bridge the gap
between the demand and supply of skilled workers by imparting industry-
relevant skills to the youth.

• This will help create a workforce that is aligned with the needs of the
industry and capable of meeting the demands of the job market.
• Creating employment opportunities: Another goal of the Skill India initiative is to create
employment opportunities for the youth.

• The initiative aims to provide training and skill development opportunities to young people
from all sections of society, including those from marginalized communities, to improve
their employability.
• ENCOURAGING ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE SKILL INDIA INITIATIVE ALSO AIMS TO PROMOTE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
AND SELF-EMPLOYMENT AMONG THE YOUTH.

• BY PROVIDING TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS, THE INITIATIVE AIMS TO CREATE A
CULTURE OF INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE COUNTRY.
ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF TRAINING:
• THE SKILL INDIA INITIATIVE AIMS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION PROVIDED TO
THE YOUTH.
• THIS INCLUDES SETTING UP WORLD-CLASS TRAINING INFRASTRUCTURE, DEVELOPING INDUSTRY-
RELEVANT CURRICULA, AND ENSURING THAT TRAINING IS DELIVERED BY QUALIFIED TRAINERS.
LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY:
• THE SKILL INDIA INITIATIVE ALSO AIMS TO LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS AND
EFFICIENCY OF TRAINING AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS.
• THIS INCLUDES THE USE OF ONLINE TRAINING PLATFORMS, MOBILE APPLICATIONS, AND OTHER DIGITAL
TOOLS TO DELIVER TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO THE YOUTH.
• AIMED AT OPENING UP MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO CONTINUOUSLY LEARN NEW-AGE SKILLS ON
TOPICS SUCH AS CODING, AI, ROBOTICS, MACHINE LEARNING, ANIMATION AND GRAPHICS, AND
CYBERSECURITY.
RECCOMENDATIONS-
• ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD FOCUS ON IMPROVING THE
QUALITY OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING BY COLLABORATING WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS AND
PROVIDING HANDS-ON TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES.

• BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY: THERE SHOULD BE A CLOSER COLLABORATION BETWEEN
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO ENSURE THAT THE CURRICULUM IS RELEVANT TO
INDUSTRY NEEDS AND THAT GRADUATES ARE JOB-READY.
• INCREASE PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION: THE PRIVATE SECTOR SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN SKILL
DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES THROUGH PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS, WHICH CAN BRING IN INDUSTRY EXPERTISE
AND FUNDING.

• INCREASE AWARENESS: AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS SHOULD BE CONDUCTED TO INFORM STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND
EMPLOYERS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES AND THE AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITIES.

• FOCUS ON SOFT SKILLS: SOFT SKILLS SUCH AS COMMUNICATION, TEAMWORK, AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ARE
INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT IN TODAY'S WORKPLACE. SKILL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES SHOULD FOCUS ON
DEVELOPING THESE SKILLS ALONGSIDE TECHNICAL SKILLS.
