Author’s Purpose
• Definition: It is the reason why the author writes a text.
Why readers need to know the author’s
purpose?
• To know the motive of the author
• To know the feeling of the text
• Avoid misleading information
Kinds of Author’s Purpose
Generally there are three main classification of author’s purpose, Or it is
called PIE:
• Persuade
• Inform
• Entertain
To Persuade
• Use the information to convince people to change their opinion or change
their point of view or behavior. It consists of arguments.
• The reader needs to determine and evaluate the argument.
• Sources of such purpose can be found on newspaper editorial, political
speech, advertisements, passage about controversial topics.
Example
• Brushy brooms are the best you can buy! Everyone must have one in their
homes. Whether you are sweeping indoors or outdoors, you will do a
better job with a Brushy broom!

To Inform
• The goal is to explain, clarify, discuss, describe, compare, analyze, or
share information, etc.
• Pay attention on explanation, examples, illustration and so on.
• The reader’s effect is to learn the information on the text.
• Sources of such purpose can be found in textbooks, newspapers, journal
articles, brochures, encyclopedias, etc.
Example
• There are many creatures that live in the sea. Some fish live in shallow
water and some live in the deepest part of the sea. These fish come in a
variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Today, many new creatures are still
being discovered.

To Entertain
• The goal is to make the reader cry, laugh, happy, frightened, etc.
• Pay attention on some literary devices: characters, plots, figurative
language, moral message, etc.
• Generally, such purpose can be found on short story, poem, song lyric,
