Equally important, track is special to me because it is
competitive. Seriously, what is better than winning something?
Not much. In track, winning is not a one-person show; there is
always someone pounding the track right next to me. A perfect
example of this was during last year’s regional track meet. The
normal girls who run the 800 meter race were not there, so the
coaches put me in. I had never run that race competitively, so
I had no idea when I should pace myself and when to go full-
out sprint. Instead of giving up, I decide to run with a girl my
size who was in fourth place; we stayed together until the end,
when I sprinted and took fourth place out of twenty-two. Not
bad for a first timer. Although track is extremely competitive,
sometimes the competition can help a runner win!

Truly, community service helps open one’s eyes to reality.
For instance, many people often hear of animal abuse, yet
never dream of actually witnessing the act. If teens are to
volunteer at an animal shelter, most likely they will an abused
animal. A television show that deals with animal abuse is
ASPCA. Many of the “stars” of the show are animal cops
working against abuse of our furry friends. Coincidentally, on
the last episode, several teenagers were volunteering at the
shelter where the police shelter abused animals. One of the
teenagers was literally in tears over the number of animals in
the shelter. Undeniably, volunteering brings people’s heads
out of the clouds to help the community.

Volunteer hours should be established as a requirement for high
school graduation because it is morally important to help out one’s
community. Historically speaking, the world-renowned Ancient
Egyptian civilization held similar beliefs. The Ancient Egyptian
civilization is known as one of the best of the earliest communities.
The members of the vast empire had special rituals where girls and
boys became young adults. These rituals required young adults to
help out other adults and families in the community to test and
challenge their abilities to cooperative as good citizens. Even
thousands of years ago, good citizenship was crucial in the process of
young people becoming adults. Undeniably, high school students
should be required to complete community service hours because in
any culture, helping out in one’s community is necessary in the
development of a good citizen.

Certainly, Christmas holds a special place in my heart
because it brings families together to enjoy celebrations.
With all the grand parties and reunions, entire extended
families come together to celebrate this joyful season. This
time of the year is so significant that it is even written about
in many fiction novels. In a literary vein, in Pann’s
Labyrinth, Ofelia, the protagonist, and her entire family
reunited to celebrate Christmas after being divided during
Franco’s fascist regime. Ofelia felt thoroughly elated for she
and her family were back together, finally. Enjoying
wonderful moments during the holidays with friends and
family truly warms the heart.

First and foremost, reading is an essential part of everyday
life. Teachers always say we will use information for the rest of
our lives. Truly, how often will I need to use the Pythagorean
Theorem? Not too often after I finish Algebra. Reading is
another story. I will have to read every day for the rest of my
life. Even if I am a singer, I will need to read lyrics. In fact it
doesn’t matter what I do with my life, reading is important!
Just the other day I was watching The People’s Court. The
defendant signed a contract she never read, and Judge Melian
just looked at her, completely exasperated, and said, “Listen,
you have to read everything you sign. You made a huge
mistake, and now you are going to fix it.” Undeniably, reading
must be the most important subject we learn in school.

Furthermore, every vote is crucial in determining an
election. How many times have we heard someone say, “My
vote doesn’t matter”? Historically speaking, this isn’t accurate.
The 2000 presidential election is a prime example of this.
Florida ended up in the middle of a huge controversy because
there were questions raised about the ballots and how they
were counted and cast. Just a few thousand votes determined
which way Florida’s electoral votes were cast, and in turn,
these electoral votes determined the outcome of the
presidential race. A few thousand votes out of tens of millions
ended up deciding who the commander-in-chief of the United
States of America would be. Without a doubt, every vote does
count and each citizen should exercise his or her right to vote!

Moreover, many people fought and died for everyone to
have an equal right to vote, regardless of race, sex, or
religion. In America’s not so distant past, not everyone was
able to vote freely and without fear. I saw a movie entitled
The Long Walk Home with Whoopi Goldberg about the Civil
Rights Movement in the 1960’s. Her character was a maid
who took the bus to work every day. When the Montgomery
Bus Boycott began, Whoopi’s character would walk to work
and back instead of crossing the picket lines. By refusing to
ride the bus, the African Americans were trying to send a
message that they wanted to their right to vote. Obviously,
the struggles others have endured make voting not only a
right, but a privilege.

Developing a plan to help the environment is imperative if
we are going to save our planet from the course it is on.
Currently, global warming is threatening the polar ice caps and
many species around the world. My family supports WWF
(World Wildlife Federation) and we receive information about
the crisis Earth is facing and how it is affecting animals on
every continent. Every month, WWF’s informational newsletter
lets us know what is happening around the world and how we
can be a part of helping the environment. This is something
that must be done, not only for ourselves, but also for future
generations. Thus, we must develop a plan of action to make
the present and the future both better and safer for all living
creatures.

Initially, by serving healthier food at schools, we can
prevent obesity from occurring at a young age. For
instance, I once watched a movie called Super-Size Me. The
movie was incredibly fascinating and showed how the
number of obese Americans has grown at an alarming rate
over the past decade. America is one of the most
overweight countries in the world. This is partially due to
the fact that Americans eat too much fast food and not
enough healthy food. School lunches often consist of fried
foods, fruits packed in sugary syrup, and other unhealthy
choices. By making lunch healthier at the school, this type
of eating may carry over into the choices students make
when they are not in school.

First and foremost, with added maturity and responsibility
should come added privileges. Whenever my parents are out of
town, I am left in charge of my two younger siblings, and let me
tell you, they are a handful. If my mom and dad know that I am
responsible enough for extended babysitting, then I should be
responsible enough to get to stay out an hour or two later in the
evening. The age argument should not even matter. Many times
there is no correlation between age and level of responsibility. In
the short story, “Raymond’s Run,” the main character Squeaky is
in charge of taking care of her brother, even though he is older
than her. She is a perfect example of someone who is mature
beyond her years. Obviously, I too am mature for my age and
this should be reflected in a later curfew.

Additionally, conversing has been simplified through
advancement of modern-day technologies. For instance, news
can be broadcast on television, within minutes of the event,
worldwide. On September 11, 2001, modern technology was
vital when the country needed to be alerted about four plane
hijackings that took place throughout our nation. All major
television networks and radio stations were able to report the
story as it happened and give us up-to-the-second information
on the situation. This allowed people thousands of miles away
from the attacks to take necessary precautions. Telephones
also became significant during this crisis as people frantically
called loved ones to ensure they were safe. Thus,
communication is a fundamental part of modern technology.

To begin with, having higher security may prevent
a school shooting. For instance, in the movie Pay it
Forward, a young teenager gets in a fight with a
“tougher” kid when trying to defend his best friend.
The tough guy pulls out a knife and takes the beloved
life of a 13 year-old. Though this is a movie, incidents
happen like this all of the time. One example would
be the horrible Columbine shootings. Clearly, these
things aren’t a one time deal, and it could happen to
my school, that is why more security could help
prevent them.

Additionally, the principal shouldn’t allow on-line courses to
be implemented at our school because students won’t
experience as many fun encounters. For example, when I was
in fifth grade my class was so mischievous that we drove our
substitute teacher daft and had such a hilarious time doing it
she never returned. These precious memories could never
exist by taking all your classes on-line. In early America,
when the Native Americans roamed, children would encounter
many activities in their daily life, such as trying to learn to
hunt, that could only come from group encounters. Obviously,
the moments in life that you will always remember come from
being with others, not alone.

Equally important, culture can affect how someone dresses.
Recently, I read this book called The First Day of School. It was
about a young girl from South Africa named Kufasse Karni. She
had just left her small village near Capetown and was on her way
to Washington D.C. to live with her Aunt Mabel. Kufassee was to
attend a public school in her district. On her first day of school,
she went dressed in her traditional clothing. While the rest of
her class was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, Kufassee stood out
majorly. Some of her fellow classmates discriminated against
her because she wasn’t wearing the latest styles. On the other
hand, some were fascinated by her colorful dress and her strong
accent. As you can see, your heritage does have some influence
on the way you dress.

Equally important, people love to watch others humiliated
and tortured. As sad as this is, it is only the truth. TV viewers
find the embarrassment of others truly entertaining. For
instance, as I mentioned earlier, I was watching an episode of
“Survivor”, where their mission was to eat the most larvae in
order to receive a special prize. By watching these people
getting tortured by the grotesque taste, I get wildly
entertained and drawn into the television. The only thing on
my mind at this point (besides my uncontrollable laughter) is
what crazy challenge they would have to face next. Clearly,
TV viewers find the torture and humiliation of people in reality
shows pure entertainment.

To begin with, following rules can help keep you safe.
For instance, in the movie The Spyderwick Chronicles, a
young boy discovers a magical book that holds important
secrets to another realm. Despite the clear warning on the
book, he opens it anyway. The battle that ensues places his
whole family, along with an entire world of magical
creatures, in mortal danger. Though he does eventually
protect the book and save his family, this could have all
been avoided had he only listened to the warning.
Evidently, sometimes we have to understand that rules are

Initially, the transition from Virginia to Florida allowed
me to break out of my shell. I was always the shyest
person in the class until I moved! When I enrolled in fifth
grade at Manatee Bay, I was overwhelmed by the size of
the school. I had never been in a school with 1500 kids.
Naturally, I was intimidated and being so shy I had a hard
time talking at all. Gradually, I realized if I was going to
make any friends, I would have to start talking. Now, in
eighth grade, I am very outgoing, and I only shut up
when I am in class! Obviously, moving to Florida helped
me overcome my shyness.

Furthermore, volunteering should be mandatory for
graduation because it is skill building. Some skills gained
include cooperation and kindness. A perfect example of
this is when my group of NJHS members went to deliver
household goods to foster care centers to help the foster
teenagers. First, we arranged to have a drive at school.
Students donated all types of toiletries appropriate for
teenagers. Then, we sorted all of the donations and
packed them into boxes. Finally, we took the toiletries to
the foster center. Obviously, this service project helped
me learn more about cooperation and kindness.

tiring. Take, for example, Hannah Montana. Sure it is

being super exhausted at the end of every day! Imagine
