PLASTIC
Plastic is a synthetic or semi-synthetic material made from a wide
range of organic polymers, primarily derived from petroleum and
natural gas. It is a versatile and widely used material due to its
unique properties, including durability, lightweight nature, and
ability to be molded into various shapes.
Plastic has become an integral part of our daily lives and is used in
numerous applications, including packaging, construction,
transportation, electronics, healthcare, and consumer goods.
Environmental Impact: While plastic offers numerous benefits, it
also poses significant environmental challenges. One of the most
pressing issues is plastic pollution, especially in oceans and
waterways. Improper disposal and inadequate recycling practices
have led to large amounts of plastic waste accumulating in the
environment, harming wildlife and ecosystems.
VARIOUS
ILEFFECTS CAUSED Environmental Pollution: Improper disposal
BY PLASTICS of plastic waste leads to environmental
pollution. Plastic does not readily
biodegrade, causing harm to ecosystems and
wildlife.
Marine Pollution: Plastic pollution is a
significant problem in oceans and water
bodies. Large amounts of plastic waste end
up in the marine environment, endangering
marine life.

PLASTIC IN PACKING INDUSTRY
Plastic plays a significant role in the packing industry due to its versatility,
cost-effectiveness, and various desirable properties for packaging
materials. It is widely used in the packing industry for a wide range of
applications, including:
◦ Food Packaging: Plastic is commonly used for packaging food products,
including fruits, vegetables, snacks, beverages, dairy products, and
processed foods. It helps preserve the freshness and quality of food,
provides a barrier against contamination, and extends shelf life.
◦ Beverage Packaging:
◦ Personal Care and Cosmetics Packaging
◦ Household and Cleaning Products
◦ Retail Packaging
◦ Industrial Packaging:
A large number of produced plastic is used for purpose of
packaging in various industries
BIODEGRADABLE PACKING
Biodegradable packaging refers to packaging materials that can break
down naturally and decompose into non-toxic substances over time, with
the help of microorganisms and environmental conditions. These materials
offer an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastics, which can persist
in the environment for hundreds of years.
The biodegradation of bioplastic wrappers can occur through two primary
pathways:
1. Composting
2. Soil degradation.
NECESSITY OF BIODEGRADABLE PACKING
Biodegradable packaging is necessary to combat plastic pollution, reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, and promote a more sustainable and circular
economy. By embracing biodegradable alternatives, we can protect the
environment, conserve natural resources, and create a healthier planet for
current and future generations.
Biodegradable packaging is necessary for several important reasons, all of
which are related to environmental and sustainability concerns. Here are
some of the key reasons why biodegradable packing is essential:
Reducing Plastic Pollution
Minimizing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Protecting Wildlife and Marine Life
Utilizing Renewable Resources
Improving Landfill Management

COST OF PRODUCTION
The cost of production for bioplastic film from fish scales can vary
based on several factors, including the scale of production, the
availability and cost of raw materials, the manufacturing process, and
the location of production facilities.
1. Raw Material Cost: The cost of fish scales, the primary raw
material, will play a significant role in determining the
overall production cost. If fish scales are obtained as a
byproduct from fish processing facilities at low or no cost, it
can positively impact the cost of production.
2. Processing and Treatment Costs: The process of converting
fish scales into chitosan and then into bioplastic film involves
several steps, including cleaning, acid treatment, alkaline
treatment, and film formation. Each of these steps will incur
costs for equipment, chemicals, and labor.
3. Extraction Efficiency: The efficiency of the extraction process
will also influence the cost. Higher extraction efficiency will yield
more chitosan from a given quantity of fish scales, potentially
reducing the raw material costs per unit of bioplastic film
produced.
4. Quality and Performance: The desired quality and performance
characteristics of the bioplastic film may impact the cost. For
instance, additional processing steps or higher-quality additives
might be required to achieve specific properties like improved
strength, barrier properties, or flexibility.
5. Certification and Compliance: If the bioplastic film is intended for
specific applications, such as food contact, it may need to meet
certain certifications and regulatory standards. Ensuring
compliance with such standards can add to the overall cost
MARKET OPPORTUNITY
The market opportunity for biodegradable packaging in South India is
significant and promising. Several factors contribute to the growing
demand for biodegradable packaging solutions in this region:
1. Agricultural Sector: South India is known for its agricultural
activities, and biodegradable packaging materials can find
applications in agriculture, such as mulch films and seedling
trays.
2. Food and Beverage Industry: South India has a vibrant food
and beverage industry, and there is a growing demand for
sustainable packaging solutions, especially in the takeaway
and delivery segments.
3. Environmental Awareness: There is an increasing awareness
and concern about environmental issues, including plastic
pollution and its impact on ecosystems. Consumers and
businesses alike are seeking eco-friendly alternatives to
reduce their environmental footprint.
4. Waste Management Challenges: Proper waste management remains a
challenge in India. Biodegradable packaging offers the advantage of
reducing plastic waste and easing the burden on waste management
systems.
5. Tourism and Hospitality: The region's tourism industry also presents
opportunities for biodegradable packaging, particularly in hotels,
restaurants, and tourist destinations that prioritize eco-friendly practices.
6. E-commerce and Retail: With the rise of e-commerce and online
shopping, there is a need for sustainable packaging solutions for
shipping products to customers.
