Practice Measures Surgery
All injured patients undergoing an operation should receive
preoperative antibiotics. The type of antibiotic is determined
by the anticipated source of contamination in the abdomen or
other operative region; additional doses should be administered
during the procedure based on blood loss and the half-life
of the antibiotic. Extended postoperative antibiotic therapy is
administered only for contaminated open fractures. Tetanus
prophylaxis is administered to all patients according to published
guidelines.
