of Prevention, as it relates to health, is really about avoiding
prevention disease before it starts. It has been defined as the plans
for, and the measures taken, to prevent the onset of a
disease or other health problems before the occurrence of
the undesirable health event. There are four distinct levels
of illness prevention (Fig. 1). These levels help the
individual to prevent him/her from getting any disease.

Activities designed to protect patients or the members of

PRIMORDIAL PRIMARY SECONDARY TERTIARY

1)Primordial Prevention:

In 1978, Strasser coined the term "primordial

prevention" to mean activities that prevented the
penetration of risk factors into population. The
basic idea is to intervene in to stop the appearance
of risk factors in the population.

strategies of primordial prevention:

 Health education
 Environmental modification
 Good food and nutrition.
 Regular physical activities.
 Prevention of alcohol and drug use.
 Healthy use of leisure time and encouraging
social activities.
 Ensuring basic needs of all, such as food,
housing

2)Primary Prevention :

Primary prevention includes actions taken

prior to the onset of disease, which removes
the possibility that the disease will ever occur.
In this, actions are taken before the onset of
disease. It signifies intervention in the pre-
pathogenesis phase of a disease or health
problem. Primary prevention is achieved by
following two components, health promotion
and specific protection.

strategies of primary prevention:

• Health promotion:

• Health education

3)Secondary Prevention:

It is defined as an action that halts the

progress of a disease at its incipient stage and
prevents complications. Basically, secondary
prevention attempts to arrest the disease
process, restore health by seeking out
unrecognized disease and treating it before
irreversible pathological changes take place
and reverse spread of infectious disease. It
includes the early diagnosis and treatment.

strategies of secondary prevention:

 Early diagnosis
 Stops the disease process.
 "Restores the health.
 Treat the disease before irreversible
pathological changes occur.
 Reverse the spread of infectious disease.
 Screening surveys play an important role
in various chronic diseases, such as
heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc.

4)Tertiary Prevention:

It is used when the disease process has advanced

beyond its early stages. It is defined as "all the
measures available to reduce or limit impairments
and disabilities, and to promote the patient
adjustment to current conditions." Interventions
that should be accomplished in the stage of tertiary
prevention is disability limitation and rehabilitation.
It includes two components disability limitation and
rehabilitation.
strategies of primary prevention

• Disability limitation: It includes the prevention

of transition of disease process from
impairment & handicap.
 Rehabilitation: It is the combined and
coordinated use of medical, social,
educational, and vocational measures for
training and retraining the individual to the
highest possible level of functional ability.

Conclusion

Primary prevention includes those measures

that prevent the onset of illness before the
disease process begins. Immunization against
infectious disease is a good example

Secondary prevention includes those

measures that lead to ,early diagnosis and
prompt treatment of a disease.
Prevention.

Tertiary prevention involves the rehabilitation

of people who have already been affected by
a disease, or activities to prevent an
established disease from becoming worse.
