Introduction
 An Earthquake of 6.4 magnitude
hit Assam on April 28th, 2021.

 The northeastern region has a


peculiar record of experiencing
earthquakes at regular intervals
due to its unique geographical
location. The state of Assam
itself witnessed two great
earthquakes (Magnitude >8) in
1897 and 1950.

CACHAR EARTHQUAKE 1869

 The 1869 Cachar
earthquake occurred on 10
January with an estimated
moment magnitude of 7.4 and.
Two people were killed and
damage was considered severe.

 The earthquake was felt in


Upper-Burma, Bihar, 
Jharkha-nd, Bengal and 
Northeast India.
1897 Shillong Earthquake

The earthquake left masonry


buildings in ruins over
400,000 km2 area.

It was felt over 650,000 km2


 from  Burma to Delhi.

The earthquake resulted in 


Shillong Plateau being thrust
violently upwards by about
11 meters.
In Goalpara, it resulted in waves from the 
Brahmaputra River, on which bank the town is
situated on, destroying the market.
Dhubri Earthquake 1930

 The 1930 Dhubri
earthquake occurred
on July 3 at 03:23 local
time near Dhubri, India
 (then British India). It
had a magnitude of Mw
 7.1. Most of the
buildings were
damaged in Dhubri and
the surrounding areas.
Assam Earthquake 1950
 The 1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake,[4] also
known as the Assam earthquake,[4] occurred
on 15 August and had a moment magnitude
 of 8.6. The epicentre was located in the 
Mishmi Hills in India.

 The earthquake occurred in the rugged


mountainous areas between the Himalayas
 and the Hengduan Mountains.

  It is also the largest known earthquake to


have not been caused by an oceanic 
subduction. Instead, this quake was caused
by two continental plates colliding.
Sikkim Earthquake , 2011
 occurred with a moment magnitude
 of 6.9 and was centered within the 
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area,
near the border of Nepal and the
Indian state of Sikkim.

 The continental Indian and 
Eurasian Plates converge with one
another along a tectonic boundary
 beneath the mountainous region of
northeast India near the Nepalese
border.
2021 Assam earthquake
 The 2021 Assam earthquake struck
11 km (7 miles) away from Dhekiajuli
, Assam, India at 07:51 (IST) on April
28, 2021 with a richter scale
magnitude of 6.4.[4] The quake struck
at a depth of 34 km (21 miles), 140 km
(86 miles) north of the main city of 
Guwahati. It resulted in two fatalities
and at least 12 injuries.

 The earthquake occurred as a result of


oblique-slip faulting at a shallow depth
just at the foothills of the Himalayas.
