2
Introduction
• Informal settlements are:
i. Areas where groups of housing units have
been constructed on land that the occupants
have no legal claim to, or occupy illegally;
ii.Unplanned settlements and areas where
housing is not in compliance with current
planning and building regulations
(unauthorized housing).

3
Int…
• Informal settlements are common features in
cities of developing countries, especially Sub-
Saharan cities.
• the product of the
urgent need for shelter by the urban poor.
• In most cities in developing countries,
unmatched/unparalleled population growth
together with unplanned developmental
activities has resulted in the urbanization.

4
Int…
• Urbanization in Ethiopia is characterized by:-
 the abundance of informal settlement
 unguided spatial expansion
 settlement density
 lack of social services &
 public utilities
• The development of informal settlement has
been the main problem associated with
expansion of Ethiopian cities.
• Asella is approximately half of its population
is living in informal settlements

5
Int…
• Informal settlement could occur in two
circumstances:
i. houses built on urban land lot which is
originally not allocated to residential use
ii.houses built on rural land but doing
transaction in the urban market.

6
Int…
• Asella is also one of the developing towns and informal
settlement is one of the major problems and affects the
improvement of the town in different ways.
• The Asella municipality authority also loss a lot of
money
 to pay for compensation of for informal settlement land
tenure
 large area is occupied with few peoples and few
families in informal ways and
 most of them has lack of infrastructure
• This proposal is mainly focused to explore the impact
of informal settlement in urban land use

7
Statement of the problem
• Informal settlement development is one of the
major causes of the urban expansion.
• The problems of informal settlement
development in Asella relates to
 The poor living conditions and
 The negative environmental and social impacts
on inhabitants of the area

8
Statement…
• Informal settlements cause a major effects on
 The proposed master plan
this also
 Sanitation risk of the settlers
contributes to
 Lack infrastructure facilities a serious
 Poor drinking water quality health hazard
in the area
 Lack of proper sewerage

9
Statement…
• The main sources of drinking water in these
settlements are water from the streams and
rivers.
• These problems visible in a variety of ways,
but they are directly associated with the major
causes of the growth in Asella.

10
Objectives
General objective
• To assess the impact of informal settlement
and how much of the land use is implemented
according to the master plan for Asella town
using GIS techniques and multi criteria
evaluation.

11
Objectives…
Specific objective
• To identify and detail the driving forces
influencing the growth of informal settlements
in Asella
• To identify the extent and nature of informal
settlement
• To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed
master plan of Asella town
• To assess the influence of informal settlement
on socio-economic, physical and environmental
factors.

12
Research Questions
• What are the underlying driving forces of informal
settlement? (Poverty, population growth,
urbanisation, land scarcity and environmental
hazards)
• What is the nature of informal settlement?
• How much percentage of the proposed master plan
is applicable?
• Is the growth of informal settlement has a negative
impact in development of town and what is the
extent?
13
Hypothesis
• It is possible to achieve the problems of
informal settlement and how much of the land
use is implemented according to the master
plan for Asella town using GIS techniques and
multi criteria decision making methods.

Materials and methods
Data
• Data is the basic and key requirement of GIS
operation for real world problem solving
scheme. So, for this study the primary data and
secondary data will be collected from different
sources.
The primary data are:
 GPS data

 population data
 Contour map of Asella town
 Drainage of Asella town
 Road map of Asella town
16
Materials …
Materials
 Personal Computer: - For general activities.
 Arc GIS software: - For data analysis.
 EDRSI software: - for pair wise and/or weight
calculation
 Micro soft office: - For writing the project
activity

17
Materials …
The methods are:
 Interview
