INTRODUCTION ON ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT,

ITS COMPONENT AND PROCESS OF DIAGNOSIS.
What is an ECU?

In an automobile industry ECU is an embedded

electronic device, that reads signals coming
from sensors placed at various parts and in
different components of the car and depending
on this information it controls various important
units/actuators.
What an ECU does?

It controls input/outputs system, emission and fuel economy .

It calculate the best spark timing or determine how long fuel injector
is open.

It ensure optimal engine performance.

INPUT/SENSOR

 Vehicle speed sensor.

 Coolant Temperature sensor.
 Oxygen sensor.
 CAM shaft position sensor.
 Boost pressure sensor.
 Crank position sensor.
 Accelerator Pedal Sensor
 Needle movement sensor
 Air mass flow sensor
 Knock sensor
OUTPUT/ACTUATOR

 K-LINE communication
 HDK unit
 Timer solenoid
 E-lab
 Check engine light
 Throttle Position
 Injectors
 Idling Air control valve
 Relay(Active Circuit)
DIAGNOSIS
 With the help of computer with
diagnostic software ,K-LINE and
ECU & BUS interface, we can
identify the fault in specific part
of EMS system.
How to check Input in ECU?

1. Turn on the ignition switch.

2. Check for 12 volt in input pin(For Eg: 37 pin in VP-37).
3. Check for earthing in respected pin (For eg: 4/5 pin in VP-37).
How to find and check ECU
Relay?

1. Turn of the ignition.

2. Find the pin in connector of relay and give
earthing to it. One relay that buzzed is (For
Eg: 18 pin in VP-37).
3. Check for 12 volts in 85 and 30 of relay.
To find fault in sensor/actuator

For Eg: Timer Solenoid of VP-37

 Pull out the connecter from HDK unit and ECU.
 Set multimeter in ohms, Connect one of the needle of
multimeter in ECU pin 114 and another in pin 7 of HDK unit. If
the value is shown around 15 kilo-ohms then the sensor is
okay.
 If not, check the wire for continuity or resistance method
( If R<1 ohm; wire is okay.)
( If R=0 ohm; open circuit.)
( If R>1 ohm; loose connection.)
 If wire is okay then timer solenoid must be replace with new
one.
EMS ACTIVE
CIRCUIT OF VP-37
ADVANTAGES

Ease of control

Adaptable to multiple scenarios.

Very low cost comparing to mechanical system.

Occupy lesser space

Less complicated design
