Growth off automotive as:

• Advancement in technology.
• Environment and emission factor.
• Increase in comfort factor.

But followed by……….

Problems:
1. More harness between module.
2. More weight to the vehicle.
3. More complexity to the wire.
4.Higher cost.
SOLUTION?
CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK
(CAN)

HISTORY
• 1940 by Robert Bosch.
• Protocol CAN bus – 1986.
• In automotive sector,
CAN standard
ISO 11898 in 1993.
Point to point contact.
Point to point contact
• Real time data transfer.
Principle
PARALLE CIRCUIT:

Total Resistance,

1/RT= 1/R1+ 1/R2 R1=120 ohm R2= 100ohm

Example,

Overall Resistance
In series,
RT= R1+R2
=120+100
=220 ohm

In parallel,
RT= (R1*R2)/(R1+R2)
= (120*100)/(120+100)
=54.54 Ohm
Failure in CAN Network due to:
• Short to each other
• Short to ground
• Short to positive
• Open circuit
• Failure of ECU due to software lock
Leads to,
Fault finding
1. On vehicle diagnosis
2. Resistance check
3. Voltage check
