Backlash adjustment between tail pinion gear

and ring gear

• Mount dial gauge perpendicular
to the teeth of ring gear with the
help of magnetic stand.
• Adjust the backlash with proper
preloading of differential side
bearing.
Friction movement of tail pinion taper
bearing adjustment
• Use holding tool to hold the tail pinion
bearing in the bench vice.
• Then, utilize device for checking
friction movement of tail pinion taper
bearing.
• 1 kg mass is placed in the slender rod
at different lengths.
• For differential tail pinion used in rear
axle 109, the bearing should not rotate
when 1 kg mass is kept before 18 cm
but should rotate from 18 cm to 36 cm.
• This can be ensured by using suitable
split spacer.
Adjustment of tail pinion depth
• Tail pinion depth gauge and dial
gauge indicator is used to
measure the tail pinion depth.
• Selecting the thicker shim,
increases the tail pinion depth.
• Selecting the thinner shim
decreases the tail pinion depth.
• Selection of the shim is done as
per the tail pinion depth
requirement.
Thrust pad adjustment
• First rotate the thrust pad in
clockwise direction until it touches
the face of the ring gear.
• Then, rotate the thrust pad in anti-
clockwise direction by 60 degrees
(1/6th of rotation)
• This ensures gap of 0.1mm to 0.33
mm in 109 rear axle differential.
• After ensuring the gap, use lock
nut for locking.
Adjustment of hub bearing axial play
• Conical bearing outer race is
fixed.
• Thicker shim pushes the bearing
away from outer race, thereby
increasing the axial play.
• Thinner shim brings the bearing
close to outer race, decreasing
the axial play.
• Hub bearing play 0.04 mm to
0.12 mm for rear axle 109.
