VEHICULAR AD-HOC

NETWORKS (VANET)

By Anosha Muzammil (45896)

INTRODUCTION

 Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) is technology that integrates the capabilities of new generation
wireless networks to vehicles. It provide communication:

• Among nearby vehicles

• Between vehicles
• Nearby fixed equipment

“The ultimate goal is to provide an accident-free environment and move toward implementation of the
zero-accident car by the help of vehicle area networks”
NETWORK ARCHITECTURE

 System Components:

• On board unit (OBU)

• Application unit (AU)
• Roadside unit (RSU): These RSUs have two
types of network devices: one used for
dedicated short range radio transmission and
another is used to communicate in between
infrastructure components.
COMMUNICATION DOMAINS
 Vehicle-to-vehicle communication uses a
wireless medium like dedicated short-range
communication (DSRC), Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

 This type of communication takes place when

the vehicle wants to communicate with a
vehicle that resides in the range of another RSU.
RSUs also communicate with vehicles in their
range, in order to pass control signals. This
communication uses a wireless medium like
DSRC, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

 An RSU communicates with another RSU in the

network. This is purely a static network as
there are no moving nodes. The RSU in this
network communicates with the other RSU
through either a wired or wireless medium.
