3 Extraction of Metals
from Their Ore
Chapter 4 Reactivity of Metal
At the end of the lesson, students are able to :

4.3.1 Communicate about the extraction of

metals from its ore by illustrations.

4.3.2 Generate ideas on how to solve problems

from unplanned mining activities to life on
Earth.
Extraction of Metals
● Extraction of metals is a process to obtain a metal from its ore
● For example : Extraction of tin from tin ore (cassiterite / tin oxide)
● Extraction of metals can be obtained through
○ Electrolysis of metallic compound in molten condition
○ Reduction of metal oxide by carbon
○ Direct heating of metallic compound
○ Mining of metal in element form in the Earth’s crust
Extraction of Iron Through Reduction of Iron Oxide in a Blast
Furnace

• Metals located below carbon in the reactivity series of metals

can be extracted by heating the metal’s ore with carbon.
• E.g. : iron ore, tin ore , lead and copper
• Commonly used in industries as carbon can be easily
obtained and is cheap
