GROUP DISCUSSION

CONCEPT
• Group discussion is an effective method of teaching and
considered a learner- centre approach of the teaching-
learning process.
• In a group discussion a number of learners interact face to
face to achieve specific educational objective.
• Group discussion is a cooperative , problem solving activity
which seeks a consensus regarding a solution of the
problem.
• Group discussion can be defined as three or more
participants who have an agreed topic to discuss and share
their views in all the aspects and submit their views in form
of report to a bigger gathering.
Definition

• Group Discussion or GD is a type of discussion that involves people sharing


ideas or activities. People in the group discussion are connected with one
basic idea. Based on that idea, everyone in the group represents his/her
perspective

• GD is a discussion that tests the candidate's skills, such as leadership skills,


communication skills, social skills and behavior, politeness, teamwork,
listening ability, General awareness, confidence, problem-solving skills, etc.
PURPOSES OF GROUP DISCUSSION
• It provides an opportunity for sharing information among the
members of the group.
• Members get an opportunity to attend group’s help to gain
and share knowledge necessary to achieve educational
objectives.
• It develops the skills of group development,group balancing
and group socializing in group members under leadership of
the teacher.
• A variety of information may be learned in short time,when a
number of people in a group share their own experience and
knowledge with others.
GUIDELINES TO CONDUCT A GROUP
DISCUSSION
• There must be adequate and effective planning of the topic of
discussion , educational objectives to be achieved and
environment for group discussion
• Plenty of time and motivation must be provided to students for
the preparation on the topic of discussion
• Group leader and each member should be well aware of their
moral and professional responsibilities during group discussion
• The teacher open the discussion session with the brief
introduction of the topic with specific objectives.
COUNT
• During discussion, the teacher assume the role of the
mentor,leader and students are facilitated to share their
viewpoint.Overtalkative students are discouraged and passive
students are motivated to participate in the discussion.
• One student from the group is asked to record the proceedings
of the discussion.
• During the discussion the teacher intervenes in case of
argumentative and ambiguous discussions and clarify doubts
when required.
• At the end of discussion ,the teacher summarizes the discussion
and concludes with a comprehensive note of carry home
messages and words of encouragement for the participants.
ADVANTAGES OF GROUP
DISCUSSION
• Each group member actively participates in achieving the
educational objectives
• It boosts the self esteem and morale of students when their
viewpoints are accepted and given due regard.
• It helps the students develop a problem solving approach
while working in a group.
• It also offers group members an opportunity to express their
viewpoints and ideas in full freedom.
• Individuals in a group develop social skills and feelings of team
activity.
DISADVANTAGES OF GROUP
DISCUSSION
• Group discussions are generally time consuming and are not
usually not completed in the scheduled time.
• Some members in a group may dominate and some may only
be passive listeners.
• Group discussion may not be very effective method for large
groups.
• Adequate preparation is required by each member to have a
fruitful conversation.
• Each participation of group members may not be possible in a
group discussion.
