Arts (Sining)
• Arts or “Sining” is defined as the different manners of expressing human
skills and imagination in the creation of aesthetic conditions, objects and
presentations. Art is not confined only to what is seen. Art involves the use
of all the physical senses in order to appreciate it.
• Art plays a significant part in the rich cultural identity of the Philippines it
mirrors the Filipino people, its history, its tradition, and the country as a
whole.

Ethnic Period (Pre-1300 AD)
• The ethnic art forms are primarily influenced by the geographical location and
the experience of the Filipinos.
• The purpose of arts is integral to life.
• Arts reflected the pagan beliefs and practices, everyday activity such as
fishing and farming, and specific decorative art pattern to the community. .
• Native Filipinos also had high respect for the natural world, they imitated
wildlife movements like birds, monkeys, and fish.

The dance in the country during pre-


colonial times vary depending in the area
where our ancestors thrive. In the high
lands, dance were imitations of the
movements of certain animals like birds
while the choreography of the Filipinos
near the sea mimics of the movement of
the fishes.

Our ancestors already have their folk literature which came in the forms of folk
speeches, songs, and narratives. This folk literature verbalized their experiences.

• The colonizers and friars used art to propagate the Catholic faith in beautiful images.
• They tend to replace the Philippine indigenous arts with western art forms.
• Religion and secularization greatly influenced the art in the Philippines.
• The friars were the ones supervising the practice of arts in the country.

used in constructing building like
churches, houses, and government
offices.

American Period (1898-1900)
• June 12, 1898 – Independence day
• American brought about many changes in the politics, economy, education, and culture of the Philippines.
• There are Filipinos who went abroad to study, those who went abroad to study come back to the country
carrying the concept of modern arts.
• Modern Art refers to the practice of art from 1860s to 1960s, the main theme of art works in this time is
national identity.
• Contemporary Art refers to the recent and current practice of art ranging from the 1970s up to the
present.
