PHILIPPINES

AND IRRI
Presented By: Nilshey Elaiza Josue
IRRI has a special relationship with the Philippines, the
country having been its home since the Institute’s
founding in 1960.

Vision & Mission
IRRI has been

in collaboration with Philrice in most of its research and
training projects in the Philippines.
The advocacy for rice research found serious and solid
support from nongovernment organizations like the
Rockefeller and Ford foundations. This came as the
importance of rice as staple food of “half of mankind”
became clear. Such was the precursor to the rising of a
research and education complex in Los Baños, Laguna where
the strongest academic institution on agriculture in Asia, the
University of the Philippines College of Agriculture (UPCA),
is located.
IRRI and UPCA combined to create a strong capacity
building vehicle for local and foreign scholars and
scientists. Before the establishment of Philrice in
1985, IRRI had granted 194 research scholarships to
Filipino researchers for their MS and PhD degrees.
IRRI also appointed postmasteral and postdoctoral
fellows and offered long and short-term training
courses in research.
IRRI has strong relations with its community in Los Baños. IRRI’s
community projects in Bay and Los Baños have benefited scores of
poor families and dependents through computer donations to public
schools, training on emergency response to natural disasters,
information seminars and awareness campaigns to improve the
quality of life of community residents, and various livelihood
projects. IRRI also spends half of its budget in the Philippines,
which helps the local economy. IRRI employs about 1,200 Filipino
employees, as well as more than a thousand contract farm workers.
Mission
IRRI is dedicated to abolishing poverty and
hunger among people and populations
IRRI that depend on rice-based agri-food
systems. Through our work and
partnerships, we aim to improve the
health and welfare of rice farmers and
consumers; promote environmental
sustainability in a world challenged by
climate change; and support the
empowerment of women and the youth in
the rice industry.
The International Rice
Research Institute (IRRI) is
IRRI the world’s premier
research organization
dedicated to reducing
poverty and hunger
through rice science;
improving the health and
welfare of rice farmers
and consumers; and
protecting the rice-
growing environment for
future generations.
IRRI is an independent,
nonprofit, research and
IRRI educational institute,
founded in 1960 by the Ford
and Rockefeller foundations
with support from the
Philippine government. The
institute, headquartered in
Los Baños, Philippines, has
offices in 17 rice-growing
countries in Asia and Africa,
and more than 1,000 staff.
IRRI
ORGANIZATION CHART
Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops
advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and
better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding,
drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
More than half of the rice area in Asia is planted to
IRRI-bred varieties or their progenies. The institute
develops new and improved methods and
technologies that enable farmers to manage their
farms profitably and sustainably, and recommends
rice varieties and agricultural practices suitable to
particular farm conditions as well as consumer
preferences. IRRI assists national agricultural
research and extension systems (NARES) in
formulating and implementing country rice sector
strategies.
Alumni of IRRI's educational initiatives include some of the world's leading rice scientists
as well as high-level NARES and agriculture ministry officials. From 1962 to 2019, more
than 300,000 students, researchers, farmers, and extension professionals, among others,
received some form of training from IRRI and its partners. Within this total number, more
than 2,000 scholars conducted research at the institute while pursuing their MS and PhD
degrees. As free educational resources, books co-published by IRRI available online have
received a total of about 6.2 million views with more than 50 million page views since
2007.
We work worldwide with all research institutions that share our goal. In
particular, we work with the national agricultural research and extension systems
of the countries where our target beneficiaries live. Rice research has no political
boundaries. We search for new solutions to both old and emerging problems
through personal and institutional efforts and through partnerships with farming
communities and other institutions, both public and private.
