Third Law of Thermodynamics

- Walther Nest

- Is concerned with the limiting

behavior of systems as the
tempeature approaches
absolute zero.
INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students shall be able
to:

a) State the Zeroth Law of thermodynamics.

b) Describe the Thermal Equilibrium of Zeroth
Law of Thermodynamics
c) Give an illustrative example of Zeroth Law.
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
-States that if two bodies are each in
thermal equilibrium with some third body,
then they are also in equilibrium with each
other. This basically explains that if
objects A and B are each in thermal
equilibrium with object C, then A and B are
in thermal equilibrium with each other.
This says in essence that the three bodies
are all the same temperature.
“All heat is of the same kind.”
What is most important is that the
zeroth law establishes that
temperature is a fundamental and
measurable property of matter.
Thermodynamic systems
are classified as :

Open system
Closed system
Isolated System
Open System
If the thermodynamic system has the
capacity to exchange both matter and
energy with its surroundings, it is said to be
an open system.
Closed System

A system which has the ability to exchange

only energy with its surroundings and
cannot exchange matter, it is known as a
closed system.
Isolated System

A system which cannot exchange the matter

or energy with the surroundings, is known
as an isolated system.
