MEASURES OF VARIABILITY

-this indicates how the scores are spread out.

1.Range = highest score – lowest score
Example:
12, 26, 15, 10, 18, 21, 20, 23, 16
R = 26 – 10
R = 16
2. Inter-quartile Range =
Example:
12, 26, 15, 10, 18, 21, 20, 23, 16, 14
Arranged data set:
10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 26
Solve for

th
IR =
IR = 21 – 14
IR = 7
3. Standard Deviation
Formula for:
Population SD Sample SD
Note: The most used formula for SD is
the formula for sample SD, so we are
going to use that formula. In finding the
SD, we just need to find for the mean,
and .
Example:
4, 8, 6, 10, 13, 8, 9, 12
𝒙 (𝒙 − 𝒙ഥ) (𝒙 − 𝒙ഥ)²
4 -4.75 22.5625
8 -0.75 0.5625
6 -2.75 7.5625
10 1.25 .5625
13 4.25 18.0625
8 -0.75 0.5625
9 0.25 0.0625
12 3.25 10.5625
n=8 Σሺ𝑥 − 𝑥ҧሻ2 = 60.5

4. Variance = s²/
In this measures of variability, just square the
computed value for standard deviation,
Example: The computed value of the
standard deviation in our example above is
2.75,
So the variance is,
s² = (2.94)²
s² = 8.64
