IRRIGATION

SYSTEM
WHAT IS IRRIGATION?

• Irrigation is the artificial application of water

to the soil through various systems of tubes,
pumps, and sprays.
WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF IRRIGATION?

• A moisture supply for plant growth which also transports

essential nutrients.
• A flow of water to leach or dilute salts in the soil.
THE FOUR METHODS OF IRRIGATION ARE:

• Surface.
• Sprinkler.
• Drip/trickle.
• Subsurface.
SURFACE
IRRIGATION
• Surface irrigation
is where water is
applied and
distributed over
the soil surface
by gravity.
SPRINKLER
IRRIGATION
• Sprinkler/spray
irrigation is the method
of applying water to a
controlled manner in
that is similar to
rainfall.
DRIP IRRIGATION OR
TRICKLE IRRIGATION
• Drip irrigation or trickle irrigation is a type
of micro-irrigation system that has the
potential to save water and nutrients by
allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of
plants, either from above the soil surface or
buried below the surface.
SUBSURFACE
IRRIGATION
Subsurface irrigation means an
irrigation device with a delivery
line and water emitters installed
below the soil surface that
slowly and frequently emit
small amounts of water into the
soil to irrigate plant roots.
MULCHING
• It is the act of covering
the soil with mulches,
such as bark, wood
chips, leaves, and
other organic material,
in order to preserve
moisture and improve
the condition of the
soil.
MULCH
• A mulch is a layer of
material applied to the
surface of soil. Reasons
for applying mulch
include conservation of
soil moisture, improving
fertility and health of the
soil, reducing weed
growth and enhancing
the visual appeal of the
area.
EFFECTS OF MULCHING.

• Mulching improved plant growth by increasing root

activity, soluble sugar, and chlorophyll a content, as
well as by providing suitable moisture conditions and
nutrients in the root zone.
