3 Finding the
Inverse of a Function
By: Izmi Handayani
When we talk inverse, imagine that we talk
about opposite thing.
• We can meet this thing in our daily life for example:

“Anna is in Jakarta (J), she wanna go to Surabaya (S)”.

Hence, the opposite is
“Anna is in Surabaya (S), she wanna go to Jakarta (J)”.

JS
SJ
Remember that:
• The opposite of “addition (+)” is “substraction (-)” and vice versa
• The opposite of “multiplication (x)” is “division (:)” and vice versa

• For example
the inverse of “ + 5” is “ – 5”
In Mathematics, you can represent a function
in three different ways:
• As a function Machine
• As an equation
• As a mapping
Work out the inverse function of
• 1. y = 2 – 4
X2 -4
(INPUT)    y (OUTPUT)

inverse function:
:2 +4
(OUTPUT) y    (INPUT)

So the inverse function is y = or 
