Introduction

As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19

pandemic, countries have been implementing
vaccination campaigns to protect their populations.
However, not all vaccination campaigns are the same. In
this presentation, I will compare and contrast the
COVID vaccination campaigns in Colombia and
Canada, two countries with very different health systems
and socioeconomic contexts.

THE COVID VACCINATION 3

Campaign in Colombia

Colombia's vaccination campaign began in

February 2021 with healthcare workers and
elderly citizens as the priority groups. The
government set up vaccination centers
across the country and implemented a digital
platform for citizens to register for their
vaccine appointments. Alarcón-Braga et al.
(2022)

THE COVID VACCINATION 4

Campaign in Canada

•Canada's vaccination campaign also

prioritized healthcare workers and elderly
citizens, with the rollout beginning in
December 2020. The government
established mass vaccination clinics and
partnered with pharmacies to distribute
vaccines. They also launched a digital
platform for citizens to book their vaccine
appointments.

THE COVID VACCINATION 5

Differences in vaccination campaigns

•Colombia's vaccination plan is more centralized, with the government

coordinating distribution and prioritization, while Canada's plan is more
decentralized, with provinces and territories having more autonomy.
Dueñas et al. (2023)

•As of August 16, 2022, 83.6% of the Colombian population has received at
least one dose of a vaccine, and 71.5% of the Colombian population is fully
vaccinated. In contrast, as of June 18, 2023, the cumulative percent of
people who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in
Canada was 83.2%. Guay et al. (2022)

•Colombia has faced challenges with vaccine hesitancy and misinformation,

while Canada has not reported significant issues in this regard.

THE COVID VACCINATION 6

Similarities in vaccination campaigns

•Both countries prioritized healthcare

workers and elderly citizens in their
vaccine distribution.

•Both countries established

vaccination centers and digital
platforms for citizens to register for
their vaccine appointments.

THE COVID VACCINATION 7

Conclusion
Both countries faced challenges such as the
distribution and application of vaccines, but
also implemented successful strategies such
as mobile vaccination clinics and public
education campaigns.
