POLITICAL ISSUES

AND SOLUTIONS
in the Philippines
FREEDOM OF MEDIA
• When media freedom is restricted, their vital functions
will break down, leading to poor decision-making and
harmful outcomes for leaders and citizens alike.

• We can defend press freedom by connecting with civil

society and good government groups who push to
strengthen transparency of media ownership and
controls.
CHILDREN’S RIGHT
• Children’s right includes the right to health, education,
family life, play ang recreation, an adequate standard
of living and to be protected from abuseand harm.

• Knowing about children’s rights allows us to challenge

attitudes and behaviours within the community that
endanger rights such as the right to safety, the right to
not be discriminated, or the right children have to
participate and have their voices heard.
KIDNAPPING
• As of September 2022, there were already 27
kidnapping cases that occurred in the Philippines.

• To avoid kidnapping, the government must first,

ensure effective border control. Second, there should
be provision of a reliable and unique identification
number of each individual such as National ID card,
driver’s license, and voter cards ! Tracking social
benefits and other identification purposes.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY
• Sexual orientation refers to a person’s “emotional, affectional
and sexual attraction to…individuals of a different gender or
the same gender or more than one gender.”
• Gender identity refers to “each person’s deeply felt internal
and individual experience of gender, which may or may not
correspond with the sex assigned at birth.”
• It is not always possible to know someone’s pronoun just by
looking at them, one of the simplest way to respect
someone’s gender identity is to ask them for their pronoun
and use them respectfully.
DRUGS
• Possession of even small amounts of any illicit drug in
the Philippines attracts mandatory jail sentences.
Police and other authorities have been publicly
encouraged to kill suspected drug traffickers who
resist arrest. Violating local laws may result in a jail
sentence, served in a local prison. Sentences are
severe.
