Using and Maintaining
Hand Tools (UHT)
Hand tools are hand-held devices
that help us in accomplishing task.
It can be found everywhere in
your house, in schools, and in all
work areas. It makes task easy and
faster to do, saving most of our
time and energy.
One of the Personal Computer in your
Computer Laboratory is not working
properly, and you decided to open the
computer case.
What are the necessary tools that you
are going to use for you to open and fix
it?
Is there any procedure that you are going
to follow?
How do you select the best tool for
the job?

How do you properly use the tools?

What is the proper tool selection

procedure?
Proper Tool Selection

• A tool is a handheld device that aids

in accomplishing a task. Tools range
from a traditional metal cutting part
of a machine to an element of a
computer program that activates
and controls a particular function.
Safe Use of Tools
• Once selected, use the tool for the
purpose for which it was designed.
• Not all tools come with detailed
instructions, but some do spell out
the safety “Do’s and Don’ts” for your
safety.
• If there are set-up/use options,
operator judgment must always be
based on what is the safest way to
use the tool.
Environmental Safety and Health Program requires the
following:

1. All tools should be kept in good

condition with regular maintenance.
2. The right tool should be used for the
job.
3. Each tool should be examined before
use and damaged or defective tools
should NOT to be used.
Environmental Safety and Health Program requires the
following:

4. Tools should be operated

according to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
5. The right protective equipment
for the tool and activity should
be used.
Flat-head screwdriver
Philip head screwdriver
Needle Nose Plier
Wire Cutter
Flashlight
Tweezers
Cable Ties
Multimeter

FOUR CATEGORIES OF COMPUTER
HARDWARE SERVICING TOOLS
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools

• Static electricity is easily generated by

friction on carpets, tile flooring,
clothing, hair, fabric, etc…
• The friction of moving air alone will
charge suspended particles and cause
the buildup of static electrical charges
on people and objects in the
environment.
1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools

• Grounded antistatic work mats used

with antistatic wrist straps provide
the most basic means for the
controlled discharge of electrostatic
electricity
Examples of ESD Tools:

Antistatic wrist strap – used to

prevent ESD damage to computer
equipment.
Examples of ESD Tools:

Antistatic mat – used to stand on or place

hardware on to prevent static electricity
from building up.
2. Hand Tools

• is a device for performing work on a

material or a physical system using
hands only. The hand tools can be
manually used by employing force, or
electrically powered, using an
electrical current.
Examples of Hand Tools:

Flat-head • Philips-head

screws.
Examples of Hand Tools:

Torx screwdriver - used to

loosen or tighten screws
that have a star-like
depression on the top, a
feature that is mainly found
on a laptop.

Hex driver – sometimes

called a nut driver, is
used to tighten nuts in
the same way that a
screwdriver tightens
screws.
Examples of Hand Tools:

• Wire cutter – Wire and cable

Needle-nose plier – cutters are tools that have
used to hold small been designed to properly
parts. It is also used to cut either wire or cable with
minimal damage to the
manipulate wire using
insulation or internal
the textured teeth. conductors of the wire or
cable.
Examples of Hand Tools:

Tweezers – used to
manipulate small
parts.

Part retriever – used

to retrieve parts from
a location that are too
small for your hand to
fit.
Examples of Hand Tools:

Flashlight – used to
light up areas that
you cannot see well.
Wire stripper- is a hand tool
designed to remove the
protective covering, or
jacket, from electrical wires.
By removing the jacket, the
wire stripper helps the
electrician expose the wire
for new uses or repairs.
Examples of Hand Tools:

Crimping tool -is the tool

used to deform the material
and create the connection.

Punch down tools- are used to

terminate wires into punch
down patch panels and punch
down keystone jacks. The idea
is the tool head blade is used
to push a wire conductor into
a IDC terminal slot (Insulation
Displacement Conductor).
3. Cleaning Tools
:

• Having the appropriate cleaning

tools is essential when
maintaining or repairing
computers. Using these tools
ensures that computer
components are not damaged
during cleaning.
Example of Cleaning tools:

Lint-free cloth – used

to clean different
computer components
without scratching or
leaving debris.

Cable ties – used to

bundle cables neatly
inside and outside of
a computer.
Example of Cleaning tools:

Compressed air – used to

blow away dust and debris
from different computer
parts without touching the
components.
Parts organizer – used to
hold screw, jumpers,
fasteners and other small
parts and prevents them
from mixing together.
4. Diagnostic Tools

• Computers are easier to use and

more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and
operating system update, but
that doesn't mean they're
problem-free.
Example of Diagnostic tools:

Multimeter – used to
test the integrity of
circuits and the quality
of electricity in
computer components.

Loopback Adapter –
used to test the
functionality of
computer ports.
.
• Network Cable Testers- This tool is used to
check network cable connectivity and
verify the correct wiring of connectors on
cable.
• External Hard Drive Enclosures- This tool is
used to place hard drive in the external
enclosure for inspection diagnostic and repair.
Also use to back up files to prevent data
corruption during repair.
Hand tools inspection process
• Before using a hand tool
whether personally owned or
borrowed, it is best to check first
if they are free from damages,
the defects, cracks, loose
handles, and other flaws that
could cause harm.
Here are some tips when using a
handful:
1. Ensure that the person to use is properly
trained and skilled.
2. Select the right tool for the job. Using a
substitute may cause accidents.
