Class Meeting Times

Reading Workshop classes meet 5 days a week, for a total of 6


contact hours.

U/T/R: 50-minute lessons


M/W: 75-minute lessons
Syllabus

• The course syllabus is available on your course Blackboard.

• All assessment dates and deadlines are shown in the weekly plan.

• The focus of each week is a reading skill. In Week 2, for example,


the reading skill is finding the main idea of a paragraph.

Worksheets for Reading Skills & Strategies (Not Graded)


You will study a different reading skill each week, such as reading
for main ideas and understanding new words from the paragraph.
The worksheets on the course Bb explain and practice these skills.
Tip: Study these skills for the midterm and final exams!

Timed Readings (Not Graded)


This activity is for speed! You read with a timer, then answer a
few questions. As your reading fluency improves during the
semester, your time will get shorter and shorter. It’s also a
chance to improve your reading skills, such as previewing,
skimming/scanning, and overall fluency.
Assessments
Vocabulary Log (10%)

Skills:
• Identifying word parts and families
• Identifying collocations (using roots,
prefixes and suffixes)
• Producing language in context

Must be hand-written on paper.


Collected twice for assessment (2 X 5% = 10%)
Graphic Organizer & Critical Thinking (GOCT)
Notebook (10%)

Skills:
• Making Inferences
• Applying Reading Strategies
• Creating Graphic Organizers
• Taking Notes and Summarizing
• Personalizing a Text or Topic

Must be hand-written on paper.


Collected twice for assessment (2 X 5% = 10%)
MyELT (6%)

MyELT is the online workbook for our Reading Explorer


textbooks. Your accounts will be set up for you after the
add/drop period ends.

• MyELT 1 (3%)
• Activities related to units from Reading Explorer 1
• Due before midterm exam

• MyELT 2 (3%)
• Activities related to units from Reading Explorer 2
• Due before final exam
ReadTheory (10%)

• This is for extensive reading – just to read a lot! You will read many
texts on the ReadTheory website and answer questions about them.
As you read, you will earn points.

• You can complete as many readings as you want. In other words,


You can keep trying to earn points until you reach the goal.

• The goal is 1200 Knowledge Points (KP). You have most of the
semester (until week 11) to reach this goal. Try to read a little each
week.
Vocabulary Quizzes (9%)

• 3 Quizzes (3% each)

• The syllabus shows which units are included

• In class on Lab Day

• Make-up quizzes are only allowed in cases of emergency.


Midterm (25%) & Final (30%) Exams

• Reading Skills & Target Vocabulary

• The Final Exam includes vocabulary from only the second


half of the semester…

…but all of the reading skills from the beginning.

Attendance Regulations

Class participation and attendance are important elements of


every student’s learning experience at QU, and the student is
expected to attend all classes. A student should not miss more
than 25% of the classes during a semester. Those exceeding
this limit will receive a failing grade (FB) regardless of their
performance.

For this class, students will receive a failing grade (FB) if they
have 17 or more absences.

homework up to 3 days late.

Late work will lose 10% of the


possible points for each day late.

Exams
If a student is absent for a common
test or a common final examination,
strict department and university
policies rules apply. The course
instructor can provide further
information on this. The student must
contact the teacher within three
working days of the exam, and then
give any documents requested.
