WHAT IS THE EXPECTED ROLE OF

ENGINEERS IN SOCIETY?
Functions of Engineer
• Research • Sales
• Design and Development • Consulting
• Testing • Government
• Manufacturing • Teaching
• Construction • Management
Research Engineer
-engineer is engaged in the
process of learning about nature
and codifying this knowledge into
usable theories.
-responsible for developing new
products, processes, or technology
for their employers. It can be done
by collecting relevant information
and data, analyzing it, performing
tests, and creating optimal
solutions that meet the needs of
their employer.
Design and Development Engineer
-conceive engineering designs from
product ideas or requirements in
mechanical, electrical and electronic
engineering.
-improve product performance and
efficiency while researching and
developing new manufacturing
ideas and systems.

-turns a product concept to a

finished physical item
Testing Engineer
-thoroughly check materials,
procedures and mechanical or
electrical systems to ensure that
customers get high-quality,
functional products. They run tests
on various components and
features in order to identify and fix
technical issues
-responsible for designing and implementing the tests that ensure the quality
and the functionality of a product. They are involved in all phases of the testing
program, from designing the test parameters to troubleshooting errors, and
writing up final test procedures.
Manufacturing Engineer
-focus on the design and operation
of integrated systems for the
production of high-quality,
economically competitive products.
-responsible for designing,
implementing, and reviewing the
procedures involved in
manufacturing processes
-responsible for production
personnel or assumes responsibility
for the product.
Construction Engineer
-oversee large construction
projects. They inspect project
drawings and designs, manage
project schedules and resources,
and perform cost calculations.

- Either directly in charge of

construction personnel or may have
responsibility for the quality of the
construction process.
Sales Engineer
-assists
the company’s customers
to meet their needs, especially
those that require technical
expertise
-responsible for supporting sales
executives in solution selling to
prospects, executing strategic
deals, modeling financial business
cases, and matching customer
requirements to proposed
solutions
Consulting Engineer
-Works as a consultant of any
individual or organization requiring
his services
Government Engineer
-Employment in government performing
any of the various tasks in regulating,
monitoring, and controlling the activities
of various institutions , public or private.
Teaching Engineer
-Engineer gets employed in a school
and is assigned as a teacher of
engineering courses.

-Some of them later become deans,

vice presidents and presidents
Management Engineer
-The engineer assigned to manage
groups of people performing
specific tasks

-The specialist who plans and

coordinates engineering projects
and oversees multiple activities in
the research and development of
new products
Prehistoric tools, equipment, projects, developed by
engineer:
• Stone bladed axe and irrigation system used to promote crop
growing (6000 to 3000 B.C.)
• Pyramids of Egypt (3000 to 6000 B.C.)
• Road building by Romans (600 B.C. to A.D 400)
• Production of paper and gunpowder by the Chinese (100 A.D. to
1600 A.D.)
• Production of steam engine and spinning and weaving
machinery (1601 A.D. to 1799 A.D.)
• Manufacture of cars and household appliances – modern times
Various Types of Organization based from
degree of engineering jobs
• Level 1 : minimal engineering jobs (e.g. retailing jobs)

• Level 2 : moderate degree of engineering jobs

(transportation companies)

• Level 3 : high degree of engineering jobs (e.g.

construction firms)
WHAT IS ENGINEERING
MANAGEMENT?
Engineering Management?
-the application of the practice of management to the practice of
engineering
- Engineering management is a career that brings together the
technological problem-solving ability of engineering and the
organizational, administrative, legal and planning abilities of management
in order to oversee the operational performance of complex engineering-
driven enterprises.
-activity
combining technical knowledge with the ability to organize and
coordinate worker power, materials, machinery, and money
Management?
-the coordination and administration of tasks to achieve a goal
-creative problem solving-process of planning, organizing, leading
and controlling an organization’s resources to achieve its mission
and objectives.

-In simple manner, management must:

A. Seek to find out the objectives of the organization
B. Think of ways on how to achieve them.
C. Decide on the ways to be adapted and the material
resources to be used.
Management?
-In simple manner, management must:
D. Determine the human requirements of the total job
E. Assign specific tasks to specific persons, motivate them and
F. Provide means to make sure that the activities are in the right
direction
Requirements for the Engineer Manager’s
Job?
-Bachelor’s degree in engineering
-Experience
-Training
HOW TO BE SUCCESFUL
ENGINEER MANAGER
ABILITY
-capacity of an engineer manager to achieve organizational objectives
effectively and efficiently.

Effectiveness
-whether objectives are accomplished

Efficient
-relative amount of resources used in obtaining effectiveness; Same
output is made with less inputs.
Motivation to Manage
-capacity of an engineer manager to achieve organizational
objectives effectively and efficiently.

“Many people have the desire to work and finish specific tasks assigned
by superiors but not many are motivated to manage other people so
that they may contribute to the realization of the organization’s
objectives.”
