01 GENIUS:
Nature or NURTURE?.
1. Why are some people geniuses and others are not? Does the environment a person is raised in
(nurture) create a genius, or is it because the person was simply born that way (nature)? Which part do
you think each of these plays in being a genius?

To my mind to be a genius is the interaction of both parts (nature and nurture). For one thing, since we are
kids we learn every simple thing, we assimilate a lot of information as we grow and also it depends on
the skill and speed of each person. For another, we need to have the capacity of our brain to retain
and process all the information. I think the genetic component might play an important role in the level
of intelligence.

2. What is one special talent or ability that you have? When did you first become aware of it? Did it come
naturally, or did you have to practice along time to perfect it? Explain. (You may instead answer these
questions about someone you know who has a talent or ability.)

I have the ability to paint in watercolor. Since I was a child my parents and I realized that paint seemed to
like me. So, I began to paint all the things I saw around me. At the beginning these paintings were not
beautiful however I practiced many times to transform them in something special and unique and now
I can enjoy painting whatever that comes to my mind I usually like landscapes.

´S
OBSTACLES.
02
1. There are many different kinds of obstacles: Physical and economic are two examples. What are some others
examples of the kinds of obstacles that people face?

People have many obstacles during their life but I want to emphasize the psychological obstacle that makes us
feel unsure and distrustful. This particular obstacle sometimes is hard to overcome because we think that it’s
going to be impossible. We feel defeated before to have begun. In fact many people just live tormented
situations yearning for a better life.

work hard step by step getting rid of all the fears and prejudices finally we should persevere until to reach our
goal.

Personally I think that I have overcome economic and social obstacles. It was when I finished the high school and
I wanted to study in the university but in my family money wasn’t enough. As a girl born in province I wanted
to look for new opportunities here in the city so I decided to challenge myself working and studying at the
same time. Nothing was easy every week I earned a meager salary and I didn’t have time to continue
studying. In addition I was shy, so I couldn’t know how to express my feelings. However I persisted pushing
myself every day and little by little I forgot the shame and I could handle the situation as best I could.

MAKING MEDICAL
Decisions.
You can enter a subtitle here if you need it
1. What role can genes play in medicine?

I read that our genes determine our physical appearance, they play an important role because they partly answer how
medicine affects us. Genes are instructions, written in DNA, so different people can have different version of the same
gene and some of them are rare. And some affect health, such as those gene variants linked to certain diseases. In fact
studying genes in general can help us to develop medicine. If scientists can identify genes that cause side effects, doctors
could prescribe those drugs effectively. This would allow some individuals to receive the right medicine that otherwise
might be bad and pose a risk for other people.

2. Do you think medical treatment could be more effective if doctors had genetic information about their patients?

If doctors know our genes, they can predict the cure and incorporate this information into the medical decisions. So this is the
principal reason why treatment could be more effective. Nowadays genetic information is useful in many areas of
medicine and it can change the life of many families. For example genetic testing can help to identify a possible
development of cancer and this method has already saved many life in the world. In conclusion in the future this could be
a good alternative to study correctly different diseases and at the same time this might reduce time, cost and failure rate
of clinical trials

3. Genetic testing is now available very cheaply. Would you want to be tested to find out if you have the gene for a certain
disease, even if there were no cure for the disease?

Although there are many people who feel anxiety about possible news and they prefer their peace of mind, I would prefer
to be tested for two main reasons: prevention and decision.

First, preventing possible illness can help me to monitor and find treatment options as early as possible. Adding to this I can
have the opportunity to help and educate other family member about potential risk.

intellectually disabled. However, he has acquired great skill in sculpture
and is capable of creating any type of animal, even if he only sees it for a
few seconds.
He began sculpting at school, making small animal molds out of lumps
of clay and working on sculptures of himself in his bedroom at night.

Clemons suffered a severe brain injury as a child, but

still managed to excel at something. Teaching me that
nothing has a limit, the limit you put on yourself, if you
like something and you excel at it, you should exploit
your skills.
WRITING 2
Bethany Meilani Hamilton
CORRECTION
Bethany Meilani Hamilton is an American surfer. He was born on February 8, 1990 United
States. From a very young age she began to come into contact with surfing, since her parents
were surfers and they taught her to surf when she was only 4 years old. At the age of 8 years
she participated in her first competition where she was the winner.
At the age of 13, Bethany survived a shark attack, in which she lost her left arm. After
successfully overcoming that serious injury, he returned to surfing and won several
competitions.
In 2004, Bethany Hamilton wrote her autobiography, which she called Soul Surfer: A true
story of faith, family, and the fight to get back on the board. Then he decided to produce
a short film, Due to the great success of this short film, they decided to produce a full film
that came out in 2011: Soul Surfer, and it was also a great success.
Currently, she does not feel the shame or hopelessness of not having an arm. If it is true
that at the beginning it was not easy not being able to do the same things in the same
way as before, it made him very frustrated and angry. But she had the support of her
family and people who wrote her letters so she wouldn't give up, that made her keep
going and not give up.
Betthany was very clear that she wanted to continue surfing. In fact, one of his most
famous phrases was; «My passion for surfing is much bigger than my fear of sharks«
Actually, she is married and has 3 children.

Bethany is clearly a worrior who, despite what she went through when
she was so young, was not defeated.
Reflexion
First of all, the English language is a commercial and popular language that helps us in all
areas of life for example improve employment opportunities, explore the world with
confidence, improve communication skills among others, for this reason I would like to make
some comments about this language, based on this advanced 10.

I would like to emphasize the learning developed in this course. I have learned to write the
different essays in an organized and precise way, taking into account the vocabulary and
spelling. On the other hand, the dialogue with my classmates is always a way to enrich and
practice my English skills and at the same time to socialize in a simple way. I also want to
highlight the dynamic way that you have taught us with different informative videos that
we have helped us to understand better and of course the good vibes that spread to us, in
addition, I have liked the five minutes of break that help the students to stay focused.
Finally I would like to give you just one suggestion, it would be great if the development of
the activities that are done in the group rooms would be reviewed in the main room in this
way we can discuss possible questions or possible answers, emphasizing even more in the
interactive dialogue.
GENETIC TESTING
Firstly, genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in genes, chromosomes, or
proteins.
People with a higher risk of having a child with a genetic disease may want to have a genetic test.
This includes: families with genetic diseases in close relatives. parents who already have a child with a
genetic disease.

Genes are inherited, passed from parents to children. Sometimes these genes can be altered causing
the proteins not to work correctly or missing, and give rise to the appearance of disorders called
genetic diseases. These altered genes can also be passed from parent to child.

Secondly, Your results can confirm or rule out a possible genetic condition or help determine the
likelihood that a person will develop or pass on a genetic disorder. Some diseases that can be
detected are:
Alzheimer’s, Friedrich's ataxia, Marfan syndrome, breast cancer, Epilepsy, Autism, Some types of
diabetes, celiac disease.

Everything has its pros and cons, in this case the pros are that they can provide a sense of relief from
uncertainty and help people make informed decisions about how to manage their health care and the
cons are that they have a generally low risk of have a negative impact on your physical health.
However, it can be difficult both financially and emotionally to find out about your results.

In conclusion, although many people are against taking the test, since they believe that it can affect
their decision-making and emotionally, but I think they would feel more relieved knowing than living
not knowing.
