Contemporary Period
(1970 – Present)
Contemporary art is an art created in the present with a continuous process.
When the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) was established on June
25, 1966, artworks, awards, and grants, among other things, were
implemented. The majority of the buildings used concrete block-life forms
classic of the modern style, while others incorporated with the state’s thrust of
reviving Filipino traditions, such as the National Arts Center in Mt, Makiling
designed by Leandro Locsin to relate the style to Ifugao fale.
Contemporary Period
(1970 – Present)
During the 70s and 80s, Social Realism appeared, portraying protests about the
sociopolitical issues and struggles in the Philippines. It is a larger cultural
dialogue about contextual frameworks like identity, family, community, and
nationality. This art form is not only shown on canvas but also in posters,
illustrations, or street art that is shown in public places. An example of an
artwork under this is “Itak sa Puso ni Mang Juan” by Antipas Delotavo.
Contemporary Period
(1970 – Present)
And it is the art of today. The art of Filipinos during 1970
up to now mirrors the society and the culture of present
times. Artists experimented and used different methods and
materials and produced non-conventional artworks with a
wide range of variety. Their art is often about ideas and
concerns, rather than solely the aesthetics.

The Importance of Philippine Contemporary Arts

It is so important because every contemporary art reflects someone's

feelings, ideas, or perspectives. Through contemporary art, Filipinos can
express themselves in a way that will be safely observable to others. It is
a means of personal expression. Every art has its own story to tell.
Contemporary art is significant also because it reflects our society and
culture. It mirrors the many changes that we've had over the course of
our lifetimes. There are also well-known Filipinos that we should be
proud of because of their greatness in contemporary arts.
