EARTH SCIENCE

PLANET EARTH
and
ITS PROPETIES TO SUPPORT LIFE
Recognize the uniqueness of Earth being the only planet in
the Solar System with properties necessary to support life.

Lesson 1 – Week 1
2

Before we start with the lesson,

write down your idea on the
question:
Why do you think Earth is the ONLY planet
in the Solar System that can support life?

Observe our neighbor planets – Venus and Mars. What are the similarities and differences of these planets compared to Earth? Even though they are near our
planet, life is not possible in Venus and Mars. One explanation is somehow related to the story of “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears”. Are you familiar with the story?

Factors that Makes

Earth Habitable
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

TEMPERATURE 15

 Influences how quickly atoms & molecules

move
 Allows liquid water to exist on Earth’s
surface
which is favorable to life.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

WATER 16

 Dissolves & transports chemicals

within and to and from a cell
 The existence of
water in three phases
is very essential to
Earth’s diverse
ecosystem.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

ATMOSPHERE 17

 Traps heat, shields the

surface from harmful
radiation, and provides
chemicals needed for
life, such as nitrogen and
carbon dioxide.
 It regulates the balance
of water, oxygen and
carbon dioxide
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable
ENERGY from the SUN 18

 Light or chemical energy is used by organisms to run

their life processes such as the process of
photosynthesis used by producers like plants.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

NUTRIENTS 19

 Used to build and maintain an organism’s body.

Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

MAGNETIC FIELD 20

 a planet requires a rapidly

rotating magnetic field to
protect it from flares from
nearby stars and from
harmful radiation

On this activity, you are expected to learn on what

makes planet Earth habitable or has the ability to
support life. The Web (Internet) contains a vast of
information where you can learn more about our
planet. So, here’s a WebQuest activity for you.
Here are the simple steps to complete this
WebQuest:
1. read the question
2. follow (click or search) the link
3. read the article then write down the answers to
the questions you’ll find from the link.
25

1) Is there a possibility that there are other planets that are habitable
aside from Earth? Why? Why not? (https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/what-
is-an-exoplanet/how-do-we-find-life/)

2) What makes a planet habitable?

3) Why life is not possible on our neighbors planets like Venus and
Mars?
