Definition of conflicts

- This is a clash between individuals arising out of a difference in


thought process, attitudes, understanding, interests, requirements
and even some times perception.
 
- This results in heated arguments physical abuses and definitely
loss of peace and harmony.
1. Conflicts Types of conflicts:

in schools There are 4 major types:-


i) Interpersonal conflict
ii) Intrapersonal conflict
iii) Inter group conflict
iv) Intra group conflict

- Interpersonal conflict- with an individual.


- Intrapersonal conflict-between 2 parties.
- Intergroup conflict – between 2 groups.
- Intra-group – within a group or team
(i) There are 5 main causes of conflicts:-
i) Information conflicts
ii) Values conflicts
iii) Interest conflicts
iv) Relationship conflicts
v) Structural conflict.

In a school setting there are many different


causes of conflict but the most common are:-
i) Competition.
ii) Bullying
iii) Differences in cultural values or beliefs. viii) Usage of resources and places
iv) Miscommunication ix) Dating
v) Fighting. x) Sexual harassment
vi) Group rivalry xi) Loss or damage to school property
vii) Discrimination xii) Various elections
xiii) Travel and partying
Effects of conflicts in schools:-
i) Discomfort
ii) Insecurity
iii) Insignificance feelings
iv) Sadness
v) Resentment
vi) Stress

Conflict Management in schools.


i) Recognize emotions
ii) Society describes the problem and shares your positive intentions.
iii)Actively listen and seek first to understand.
Vi) Share your perspective of the problem and the impact.
V) Work together on an action plan or next steps.
Vi) Check for progress and express thanks.
Vii) Put in place a variety of programs and curricula focus on positive discipline and classroom management based on
relationship building rather than punishment.

- Mediation and restorative processes such as circles, restorative questions, and formal conferencing work toward
improving communication and conflict resolution skills to foster safer, more welcoming school communities and
improved learning.
In conclusion:
Conflicts in schools distract the learning environment. Effective methods to resolve conflicts are
essential for both students and teachers to maximise learning and build problem solving skills.
Staff, student and parent trainings can build school capacity to better manage conflict in the school,
community.

School related trainings include:-


i) Using circles effectively.
ii) Dealing with difficult people.
iii) Team building for staff
vi) Parenting workshops.
V) Basic communication skills.

Such trainings will go a long way either to minimize, eradicate or do away completely with conflicts in
our schools to a certain extent.
