WORLD VIEW OF AXIOLOGY

• The word “Axiology” is derived

from two Greek roots
• ‘Axios’ Worth or Value
• ‘Logos’ study
WHAT IS AXIOLOGY?

• Axiology is the branch of philosophy dealing with quality

or value (Rosenthal,1967).

• Axiology is the branch of philosophy that studies

judgments about values including both of ethics and
aesthetics (Chopra, 2005).
DEFINITION

• Axiology or study of Value seeks to understand the

meaning, nature, and origin of notions of “values”
and “value judgement”.
• According to Charles W. Morris (1901–1979): “Since
the life process depends on the selection or rejection
of certain objects or situations, preferential behavior
(positive or negative) is a basic phenomenon of life.
AXIOLOGY IS CLOSELY RELATED TO 2 OTHER
BRANCHES OF PHILOSOPHY

Axiology

Ethic Aesthetic
Some scholars used the term (AXIOLOGY) either as:
a collective term for ethics and aesthetics
foundations for these two branches of philosophy

Ethic • Is the branch of axiology that

studies the rightness and
wrongness of human actions.

• Is Concerned with the meaning

and nature of the concept of
“good” and what it means to be
good.

Is the branch of philosophy that deals with the

Aesthetics principles of beauty and art.

Is concerned with beauty and harmony

attempts to understand the nature of beauty in

general
AXIOLOGY

Is a necessary component of both ethics and aesthetics in the

sense that:
one needs to use the concept of “worth” or “value” in
defining and understanding the notions of “good” or
“goodness”, and “beauty”
one can meaningfully determine what is “valuable” and
why something can be said to be valuable”
FOR EXAMPLE
When a person ask questions like:

1. From what is morality derived, and what is it for in the

context of society?
2. Should we seek just to understand or seek to change the
world for the better?
3. Why do we need to obey social norms?

then that person is asking axiological questions

If an authority explains fully to the person why she or she needs to obey
social rules

then the person may fully understand why he or she needs

to obey the rules
