GROUP ACTIVITY
Direction : Classify the following
organism according to the habitat where
they lived.

SPECIES
 is a group of living organism
capable of interbreeding naturally;
that is, they only interbreed with
their own kind.
Alligator Crocodile
TYPOLOGICAL SPECIES
CONCEPT
• Scientist like Aristotle and Linnaeus thought
that organism belonging to the same species
are distinctly similar in appearance.

• Later on, succeeding scientist discovered that

this was not always the case.

• Some may appear very different yet belong

to the same species since organism can
change over time in a process called
evolution.

BIOLOGICAL SPECIES CONCEPT
• This concept invokes that organism belong to
the same species if they can interbreed with
one another to form fertile offspring.

• For example, some animals may be very

similar in appearance but are incapable of
interbreeding because they are not the same
species.
Dolphins Porpoises
Leopard Cheetah
PHYLOGENETIC SPECIES
CONCEPT
• This concept considers species as a group of
organism that came from a common
ancestors.

• It is based on evolutionary relationship and

relies on a common ancestry and the species
shared evolutionary history.

• If the organism belong to the same species,

they must show common ancestry and be
distinctive from other group.
SPECIES GENETIC CONCEPT
• This is a concept proposed by most geneticist,
who considered similarity as the bases for
belong as the basis for belonging to the
same species.

• Genetic analyses can uncover species that

morphologically cannot be uncovered just by
looking at their physical characteristics.
How will you know in what levels of
biodiversity is an organism belongs?

How will you know if an organism is in

the same species?
Why is Biodiversity is important?

What human activities help protect

and conserve our biodiversity?
If the species are not kept safe or
protected, what will happed to
them?
ASSIGNMENT

•What is Taxonomy?
•What are the classifications or categories
of all organisms?
