LESSON 1
QUARTER 1
ILLUSTRATIONS OF
QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
Find each indicated product.
1. 3 (x2 + 7)
2. 2s (s – 4)
3. (w + 7) (w + 3)
4. (x + 9) (x – 2)
5. (2t – 1) (t + 5)
Activity 2: Another Kind of Equation!
Below are different equations. Use these equations to
answer the questions that follow.
a. x2 – 5x + 3 = 0
b. 9r2 – 25 = 0
c. c = 12n – 5
d. 9 – 4x = 15
e. 2s + 3t = –7
f. 6p – q = 10
A quadratic equation in one variable is a mathematical
sentence of degree 2 that can be written in the following
standard form, ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b, and c are real
numbers and a ≠ 0
Example 1:
3x(x – 2) = 10 → 3x2 – 6x = 10
3x2 – 6x – 10 = 10 – 10
3x2 – 6x – 10 = 0
The equation becomes 3x2 – 6x – 10 = 0, which is in standard
form. In the equation 3x2 – 6x – 10 = 0,
a = 3, b = -6, and c = -10.
Example 3.
(x + 7)(x – 7) = –3x
a= 1
b= 3
C= -49
ACTIVITY
1. 3x – 2x2 = 7
2. 5 – 2x2 = 6x
3. (x – 4)2 + 8 = 0
4. (x + 3)(x + 4) = 0
5. 2x(x – 3) = 15
