    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and installed a Soviet-backed ruler. In response, the United States armed Afghan mujahideen groups through covert operations. During the 1980s, the US president met with mujahideen leaders and increased support. The Soviet Union withdrew in 1988, but the country remained unstable as mujahideen groups fought each other. In 1994, the Taliban emerged in southern Afghanistan with a mission to establish Islamic law, gaining members from religious schools in Pakistan. By 1996, the Taliban had captured Kabul amid ongoing civil war.
