Part 1: The Introduction
• The introduction
should feature a hook
and challenge the
reader to read further
on.
• It should also
introduce background
information in a clear,
and interesting way.
Left Side

Part 2, Finishing Your Introduction

• Finish your introduction
with your Thesis
Statement.
• The thesis should reveal
the focus of your entire
essay.
– It should offer the
reader both the
subject of your paper
and the opinion it will
focus upon.
Right Side

Training Session 1:
Copy the Topic

critical for the growth of a hero?

the hero primarily because_______

For example, ____________________. Include a critical detail about a mentor/ hero

This detail highlights how___________

Include commentary that explains why the detail is important.

Further Direction:
Continue your body paragraph by adding one more detail and one

What Does a Conclusion Do?

1. Strongly emphasizes
the stance of your paper
(thesis statement) and
reaffirms your main
points.

A conclusion swings back, reaching

backwards to restate, reemphasize,
or reshape information already
provided.
Left Side

What Does a Conclusion Do?

2. Connects to the
introduction and
body paragraphs
in obvious or
subtle ways.

Any well written paper will make the

reader think and question. The last
sentence of your paper can help the
writer accomplish this task.

5 Conclusion Attacks
1. Go Full Circle- Repeat key 4. Shed New Light: Set the
words, finish stories, finish discussion in to a different,
descriptions perhaps larger context, OR
2. Use Description- Take challenge the read to see
descriptions further; find a the issue in a new light.
new area to describe; find 5. Look to the Future: Predict
an area that is similar yet how the issue will change or
different than the intro to affect society as time
describe moves forward.
3. Build off of a Quotation: If
the introduction provided
dialogue or a direct
quotation, use a different
quotation or reference the
information once more in a
slightly new way.

Training Session 4:
Use a Technique
4. Direction: Pick one of the techniques and try to write 3
sentences using one or more than one of them.
Remember to refer BACK to your other paragraphs. This is
just practice, so don’t put a ton of pressure on yourself!

Write Your Conclusion
• One writer’s trick is to
have your conclusion
mimic the structure of the
introduction, but in the
reverse order.
• Apply the basic structure
of your introduction, but
then flip its order.
• Example: Intro=
Ambiguous to Clear;
Conclusion= Clear to
Instead of ending with your thesis,
the conclusion restates it right at
Ambiguous (Big Picture)
the beginning.
Left Side

• Sentence 1: Thesis
Restatement
• Your conclusion should
open by a restatement of
your thesis.
• Restatement is the idea
of reemphasizing an
idea in a new way, to
offer a new perspective
• In a conclusion, the use
of restatement often is
used to be more direct,
Restatement differs from Repetition:
good writers can say the same thing in with greater urgency.
a variety of different ways
• Sentence 2: Convincing
Concrete Detail
• Reemphasize a main fact, a
piece of evidence that is
central to your paper.
• Conclusions do not introduce
new information; instead they
shine new perspectives on
content already used.
• Again, you should not simply
copy what you have written,
but instead restate it.
Right Side

Training Session 5:
Using Restatement
5. Direction: Take 2 of the concrete details
provided below. Emphasize the main
idea of each sentence by RESTATING it
in a new way.

5A. A black belt often takes 4 years of intense training for

students to earn.
5B. Advanced degrees and tiers of black belts continue to
be earned by students for many years after becoming a
black belt.
Left Side

• Sentence 3:
Commentary that
Connects
• Explain the
significance of the
concrete detail as it
relates to your
restated thesis.
Left Side

• Sentence 4: Finish with

a tone of authority
• Building off of your
commentary, create a
memorable ending to
your paper.
• This is best done by
explaining how your
paper applies to the
“big picture.”
