Biography
• Amedeo Avogadro was an Italian chemist,
and physicist, first described the law in 1811.
• He was born on August 9, 1776 at Turin, Italy.
• He died on July 9, 1856 at Turin, Italy.
• His full name was Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro.
• His parents are Count Filippo Avogadro and Anna Maria Vercellone.
• He studied at University of Turin( 1796).
• He was known for Avogadro’s Law; Avogadro Constant.
Avogadro’s Law
Amedeo Avogadro was an Italian chemist, and physicist who stated,
in 1811, that the volume of any gas is proportional to the number of
molecules of gas (measured in Moles- symbol mol).In other words if
the amount of gas increases then so does it’s volume.
What is Avogadro’s Law?
The quantity (number of moles) and volume of an ideal gas are
directly proportional to each other for a given mass of the gas at
constant temperature and pressure, according to the modern
definition of Avogadro’s Law. Avogadro’s Law connects temperature,
pressure, volume and substance amount of a certain gas, which make
it closely related to the ideal gas equation. The behaviour of particles
in and ideal gas, which lacks mass and is not attracted to one another,
can be explained by the collision between gas models and the
container’s wall.
Examples of Avogadro’s Law

• A great example of Avogadro’s Law is the way that we breathe. When

a person breathes in, the molar amount of air in their lungs goes up,
and so does the volume of their lungs (expansion of the lungs).

• The way car tires lose air is another common examples of Avogadro’s
Law. When the air that was trapped in the tire gets out, the amount of
air in the tire goes down. This causes the gas to take up less space,
which causes the tire to lose each shape and deflate.
Avogadro’s Law Formula

According to Avogadro’s rule, a gas’s volume, V, is inversely related to

it’s particle count, n. This link can be described mathematically as
follows:

Mole counts are used by chemist to determine the number of atoms

and molecules. The quantity of the particles that make up a mole of a
substance is known as Avogadro’s number or NA. It has been
established through numerous investigations that NA has a particle
density per mole of 6.02 × 10²³.
In other words, the volume V to number of gas particles n ratio equals a
proportionality constant k.
V/n = k
Thus,

This equation says that when the

number of particles in a gas changes
from n1 to n2, the volume also
changes to V1 to V2.
Avogadro’s Law Examples:
Problem 1:
A sample with 0.15 moles of gas has a volume of 2.5 L.
What is the volume if the sample is increased to 0.55 moles?

Problem 2:
You have inflated a balloon to a volume of 22.4 litres exactly. At this
volume, you know that you have 1.00 mole of gas inside the balloon. If
you continued to add air to this balloon and it reached a volume of 32.7
litres, how many moles of gas would it now contain?
