Les Articles

Les Articles

 The article is the small word in front on every noun.

 We are going to look at two articles;

The Indefinite Article and The Definite Article
L’article indéfini (The indefinite article)
 The indefinite article is ‘A’ or ‘An’ in English.
 We don’t have a plural indefinite article in English.

Masculine Feminine Plural

Un Une Des

 E.g. Un livre = A book (This word is masculine)

Une gomme = A rubber (This word is feminine)
Des stylos = Pens (This word is plural)
L’article défini (The definite article)
 The definite article is ‘The’ in English.

Masculine Feminine Vowel Plural

Le La L’ Les
 E.g. Le dessin = Art (This subject is masculine)

La biologie = Biology (This subject is feminine)

L’informatique = Computers (This subject starts with a vowel)

Les maths = Maths (This subject is plural)

It’s easy! We just look at the article before each noun and
that will tell us whether the noun is masculine, feminine or
plural!

This is why it’s very important to learn the article when we

are learning vocab in French.
Changing articles
 Once we know the gender of a noun, we can swap and change articles as we like!

Un Le Un cahier (A copy) 
Le cahier (The copy)

Une La Une table (A table) 

La table (The table)

Des Les Des crayons (Pencils) 

Les crayons (The pencils)
L’article partitif
 Means ‘some’ or ‘any’ in English.

 The partitive article forms when the preposition ‘de’ comes together
with the definite article….

De + le De + la De + l’ De + les

Du De la De l’ Des
Des exemples

Voulez-vous du thé?
J’écoute de la musique
Il boit de l’eau
Nous mangeons des croissants
When to use ‘de’ instead…
 Quantities e.g. un kilos de pommes s’il vous plait

 Beaucoup de… e.g. Il y a beaucoup de circulation le matin

 Negatives e.g. Je n’ai pas de frères

 When used with an adjective before a plural noun e.g. J’ai vu de bons films
l’année dernière
