Talk and Type
The Talk and Type tool allows the computer to type for you as you speak. (Speech-
Text) This is a fabulous tool when you just need to get your ideas down and don’t
want to worry about losing your train of thought while typing.

Let’s give it a try by completing the activity on the next slide.


Activity 1: Talk and Type
1. Open a new Document by clicking on the link here and selecting copy
2. Click on Talk and Type
3. Speak into the microphone and share information about what you did over
the weekend. You should notice the computer is typing while you speak.
4. When finished, read your paragraph and revise and edit.

Read Aloud and Spell-Check
The Read Aloud tool allows you to hear any text on any website or PDF. This is
helpful if you need assistance with your reading. But, did you know it will also read
your work back to you when you type in a Google Doc? When you hear your writing
read back to you it is often easy to find mistakes to revise and edit.

Let’s give it a try!


Activity 2: Read Aloud and Spell-Check
1. Go back to the Document titled “Weekend”. Use spell-
check to check your spelling
2. Use Play, Stop and Pause (the Read Aloud tools) to
have your writing read back to you.
3. Fix any mistakes you may have found.

The Word Predictor predicts which words you are trying to type and allows you to
insert the word automatically.

Practice Reading Aloud
The Practice Read Aloud tool allows you to record yourself reading information and
will then send the recording to your teacher.

Dictionary
Read and Write allows you to access a regular online dictionary as well as a picture
dictionary. A dictionary is helpful when you come across and unfamiliar word. It is
also helpful when you are typing and you are unsure if you are using the word
correctly. Let’s try it!

Read and Write allows you to highlight a word with your mouse and then search the

Simplify Page and Answer
Mask
Many websites have annoying commercials, fonts, and colors that distract you while
you read. Use the Simplify Page tool to get rid of everything but the text.

The Answer Mask allows you to read the page one section at a time.
Activity 7: Simplify Page
1. Click on this link to read a website about Tom Brady.
2. Click Simplify Page to see what the page looks like without the
distractions.
3. Now use the Answer Mask to help while you read.

When you highlight information on a website you may then collect highlights into a
Google Doc. The new Google Doc will also tell you where you got the information
from so you may cite your sources.

Black Widow spider using the highlighters in the toolbar.
2. Now click Collect Highlights and watch as a new Google Doc appears
with the information!

Audio Maker
The Audio Maker will take selected text and turn it into an audio file. The audio file
will save on your computer or in your Google Drive.

Personalized Vocabulary List
Use the highlighters to highlight unfamiliar words, Click Vocabulary and Read and
Write will then create a customized vocabulary list with definitions for you!

Voice Note
We know we can use the Commenting Tool in Google Docs to leave comments. Now,
we will explore how Read and Write for Google allows you to use Voice Notes. Use
the Voice Note tool to leave an audio recording.
