Where do flags come from?

South Africa

• After Nelson Mandela was released from


prison, a new South African flag was
requested.

• Mandela’s National Congress was the


inspiration for the colours black, green and
yellow.
• The red white and blue where taken from the
old flag of Transvaal, a province in South
Africa.
• The Y shape is said to represent the
convergence of cultures in the nation.
Nepal
• Nepal is the most unusually
shaped flag and the unusual peaks
of the flag represent the
Himalayas.
• The sun and the moon are
intended to represent calm and
resolve.
• The main colour of the flag being
red is taken from the national
flower, the rhododendron.
• Lastly, the blue outline around the
flag signifies peace.
Mozambique

• This flag is well known for its


depiction of a rifle, thus is to
represent the fighting and sacrifice in
their fight for independence.
• The hoe crossed over the gun is
indicative of the strong agriculture
within the country.
• Behind them is a open book which
signifies the importance of
education.
• Lastly, the star symbolises Marxism
and internationalism.
Bahamas
• In the centre of the flag, the golden stripe
represents the the sand of the beaches in
the Bahamas, the two blue stripes around
the golden stripe stand for the Caribbean
Sea which surrounds the Bahamas’ islands.
• The triangle on the left of the flag, signifies
the desire of the nation to make use of its
natural resources.
• The black colour of the triangle symbolises
the strength and vigour of the Bahamian
people.
