Masthead: Bold, clear and black makes it eyecatching and the contrast against the white background makes

it the main focus on the page alongside the main image. It ties in with the rest of the magazines colour scheme and has clean cut edges, making it more powerful.

Main sell-line and image: The main sell-line Is Music is where I can be honest. This Is a powerful quote from Amy Winehouse and we realise this because we can relate it to the main image. The black text ties it in with the rest of the cover and more importantly with the theme of Back to black, one of Amys most well known songs. Linking back to the sell-line, her songs tell us a lot about her life and opinions, with lyrics such as they try to make me go to rehab and my tears dry on their own. They often reflect how she is feeling and what events shes been going through at that stage in her life. By having the main image of her in black and white, we begin to see that underneath all the bravado, she's just very passionate about music and wants to express herself. The clothes shes wearing are mainly based around the sixties style which is very retro and links in with the sepia tone colours used on the cover. It gives the magazine a old and rustic look.

Sell-line: Another bold sell-line is Radiohead speak which is located at the top of the page. This widens the target audience as we now know that the magazine includes a variety of different artists, and not just Amy Winehouse. By having opposite colours for the one phrase breaks it up and makes the artist name stand out more from the phrase. The use of the verb Speak emphasises the fact that they have an official interview with the band themselves. Also the image of the band aligned to the right of the text is in colour and doesnt fit in with the rest of colours, which illustrates that they are not an ordinary band and like to stand out from the crowd. They dont tend to follow the rules, therefore dont follow the colour scheme. Colour: The sepia tones and plain black and whites used on the cover make it very subtle but effective at the same time. Alternating the colours for the sell lines makes each of them bold in a different way and catch our attention for different reasons. The colours link with the Motown style of music Amy Winehouse is often categorised in, as its old fashioned and look very chique and sophisticated. It has a large target audience as the older generations may like Amys style of music, yet younger people are becoming more interested in the old vintage style. Therefore, using quite neutral colours means it will appeal to all the audience types.

Masthead: The solid colour of black for the title Mojo is often the same in their magazine covers. This is because its bold and stands out against most colours. So whichever the colour theme is, it normally fits in well and still looks effective. Main sell-line and image:
The main sell-line is Exclusive! The Beatles. This quickly allows us to identify what the theme of the magazine is this week and gives us a quick overview of the content it has. Exclusive is made different from the rest of the sell-line because its placed in a red box, which reinforces a sense of urgency. This draws the readers attention to it immediately as we think it is a vital piece of information to read. The image of the band has been kept in its original condition and hasnt had much editing added to it. Making the cover simpler and look retro. They are trying to encapsulate the 1960s vibe and entice the reader. Having the different band member photos at different distances highlights them as a band throughout the years and how they have been around for such a long time. Paul McCartney is the main focus of the image as he is the largest and also overlaps the masthead, so we are drawn to him straight away. The colours are very faded which makes the sell-lines over power them and makes sure the information gets across to the reader.

Sell-line: Another sell-line that will catch the readers eye quickly is Paul speaks. Again, the colour red is used to create urgency and in comparison to the rest of the magazine, its bright and vivid. Because its short and snappy, the reader receives the information they need straight away. The old fashioned font compliments the vintage theme of the magazine. As it is located underneath The Beatles, we then understand that they are talking to the lead singer of the band Paul McCartney.

Colour: The magazine uses very dull and worn colours to create the 60s look and give it the traditional Beatles experience. The use of black and white throughout emphasises to us how old The Beatles are and that there legacy has carried on today in the 21st century. The black and white also links to the image of their album cover; the zebra crossing at Abbey Road which is one of the iconic images related with The Beatles. Red has also been embedded in the magazine cover to highlight key pieces of information to the reader, as red catches your attention and makes you think its urgent.

Masthead: The Black Masthead Mojo stands out against the pure white background. No effects have been used on the text which makes it plain and simple. Less is more in this case as keeping it simple has made it more effective and noticeable. It makes the magazine consistent as it is the same in most of their magazine covers. Main sell-line and image: The main sell-line is Blondie which immediately tells us the type of content the magazine will have. It also directly links to the main image which is a pop art image of Blondie. The bright pink fuchsia of the text explains to us that the main singer in Blondie is a very big female icon for women. It contrasts well against the yellow of the hair in the main image. Making them the main attention on the page, as the other colours used are black and white. The use of the bright colours against the traditional black and white symbolises how they are trying to introduce the old fashioned punk pop music into the 21st century. The image shows the main singer with a very powerful pose. Her head is held high to emphasise the new found power she has and the confidence she has in her own music.

Sell-line: Another eye catching sell-line on the page Is Where pop meets punk. The colours white and pink link directly to the main sell line and the rest of the magazine as the colours are continuous and are used throughout. I think the colours on the page also reflect this caption, as punk is often related with dark and dull colours. However pop is seen as bright and colourful. Therefore mixing the two iswhere pop meets punk. The outline of the text is in pink, however the fill on the text is white, to link it back to the punk theme which Is plain and simple. Colour: The colours used in the image are bright and stand out, just like pop art images, which is the effect the magazine is meant to have. On the other hand, the background and masthead are the original black and white colours which emphasises how times have changed and are trying to bring the old and the new together by having a good balance of both colours. Also, having the background white, makes the plugs and sell lines stand out more and make them more effective. The magazine has a 80s theme with the colours and bold fonts used, which automatically links to Blondie and the contents of the magazine.

The photograph which covers the whole page is in black and white which represents maturity and class. This links with the artist as she is very young and is finding her voice and identity through her music. The vibrant red colour of some of the texts ties it all together and brings in a theme of love and maybe anger. This plays on the readers mind as we cannot tell from the image which emotion she is feeling, therefore we are more inclined to read on to find out.

The Masthead of the magazine is then used again in the contents page to highlight consistency throughout the magazine. We also see this as they keep the font and colour the same throughout. It has become the magazines logo as well as masthead which is also why its included in the contents page.

The main text on the contents page is a quote from Corinne Bailey Rae (as seen in the main image) and links to an article In the magazine. This entices the reader and makes them want to look further into that article. Underneath we see her name so we know it has been quoted from her and we are given a page number in which the full article is written on. This is in red which makes it stand out against the black and white background and leads us to believe that this is very urgent and an important piece of information. Another connotation of red is love, and this signifies the love she had for her husband before he passed away. This gives us an insight into the actual article and how she feels about the topic.

The main image is of the artist Corinne Bailey Rae, which we can link directly to the sell line. The image is in black and white which symbolises her life and how everything is not as it looks. This again links with the sell line as we then understand that her husband died, meaning her life was not simply black and white. Her hair covering half of her face, conveys a sense of shyness and fear. We are then lead to believe that she has more to hide than we originally thought and that she has many stories to tell. Hiding behind her hair is a metaphor for her hiding away her secrets, which also links to one of her lyrics let your hair down as thats what shes trying to do.

By having different music capitals underneath the heading Mojo reinforces what a strong music magazine it is and to reference it to some of the biggest music capitals in the world is an honour. Making the reader more inclined to buy the magazine again and trust the opinions in the magazine to be precise. Also the iconic logo Mojo automatically tells us that the contents of the magazine is going to be music of a certain genre and will appeal to its current readers. The logo is very consistent and always looks the same which makes it easily recognisable. Especially in the countries named underneath; London, Memphis and Okemah.
The quote from Terry Hall saying my doctors tell me that this is brilliant for my health is very vague and therefore we need to read further into the magazine to find out exactly what he is referring to. This is a good technique to engage the reader quickly. It also links to the main image as he is shown very pale faced and almost unhealthy. This almost makes us want to read the article even more to find out what is so good for his health. The text is also quite large in comparison to the rest of the text on the page, which means it has more importance than the rest and could be more useful to read.

The main image is of Terry Hall and we know this because of the quote placed adjacent to the image. The high camera angle has made him become the main focus of the page and emphasises that he is an important part of this particular issue. The solemn expression used intrigues the reader to find out more about him as a person and we want an insight to his life. The bright vivid colours also make him seem more interesting and unusual which is always fascinating. This grabs the readers attention before they have read his article.

The background is an off-white colour which gives it a rough vintage look and appeals to the older audience. The main colour on the page is in the main image of Terry Hall as his red suit is very eye catching. It draws our attention to him straight away as the contrast of the red against the background makes him the main focus. It makes him look different to the rest of the page which matches well with his personality and how he is out of the ordinary.

Having a row at the top of the page, just underneath the logo Mojo clearly states the issue number and the month it was published. This reinforces the success of the magazine as it has had over 100 issues and is still a well respected magazine.

The main image of Sly Stone covers most of the page and is undoubtedly the main focus on the contents. It has a clear link to the quote at the bottom of the page as it is from Sly Stone himself. Overlapping the text over the image, we then know that they are linked in some way and should be noticed together. The rest of the writing is aligned around the image to ensure the focus is not taken away from it at all. The colours used are dazzling and balance out well against the plain black background. They are patriotic colours as he is American and we recognise this immediately.

The colours used on the page are based around the theme of America. The main image conveys this the most and highlights that Sly Stone is very patriotic and proud to be an American. The rest of the page is a block colour which makes the information on the page more important. The information has been written in white to contrast against the black, and subheadings have been made red to subtly tie in with the American theme.

The quote from Sly Stone is a very important part of the contents as it lets us know his opinion on music and the music industry. Giving his own honest opinion makes readers want to know more about him and see if he is genuine and just like any other person. The small snippet of speech makes us want to know what else he may have to say and what other opinions he has on music in general. There is an immediate link to music in the quote which is why its so vital to the contents as it is a well known music magazine.

Heading The main focus on the left side of the page is the heading; Im not a horrible girl. Emphasis has been added on the word girl to highlight that she can be feminine in her own way and wants to be seen as a girl, not just a tom boy. The press often portray Amy as a unruly individual who doesnt care about others. However, clearly stating that she is a girl makes us realise that she is just a normal person and the personal pronoun Im suggests that she wants to change peoples opinions on her. The black bold text illustrates that she wants to make the message clear and that even if people dont end up reading the article, they will at least read her quote as it is the main focus.

Main image The image linked to the article takes up the whole right side of the double spread, meaning its a more detailed photo of Amy Winehouse. The use of her hands in the photo makes it more feminine and creates a focus on her face. The tattoos on her arm look very masculine as they are prerogative images of women. This is ironic in contrast with the heading emphasising that she is a girl. The red curtain in the background represents love as its a very sensitive subject and its showing that underneath all her costume, she has feelings like any normal girl.

Text
Her name has been highlighted with a black box, and the text made white so her name stands out in the paragraph and we recognise straight away that the article is based around Amy Winehouse. This also directly links the image of her on the right side. The use of black and white ties in with the theme of going back to basics again and the fact her name has been written in capitals makes it seem more important than the rest of the text. It puts emphasis on her and draws our attention to it straight away. Colours The black and white used on the left side of the page contrast against her extravagant personality. It tells us that the article goes back to basics and finds out the simple facts about Amy. It also links to one of her most famous songs Back to black as she talks about how she is returning to the negative and dark side after her boyfriend leaves her for his ex. She is going back t o basics again, thats why the text and colours on the page are very simple. The colour photograph represents how she is coming back into the modern 21st century as it contrasts with the left side of the page being very plain and basic.

Main image: The image is of the main singer in Razorlight; Johnny Borrell. The image symbolises what the bands music is like, as he comes across as a very rebellious character, therefore the bands music may push the boundaries on different music genres. He also has a very blank expression on his face, considering hes performing an action. This suggests that he is used to breaking the rules and therefore doesnt think anything of it.

Similar product Research Double spread Analysis 2

Heading: The heading Johnny be good is an intertextual reference to the song by Chuck Berry which was released in 1958 and featured in the film Back to the future. This then appeals to a older audience as they can relate to the song and be more inclined to read into the article. There is also texture added on the text, as the photo of the water splashes is continued in the background.

Text The main interviewers name is located in the centre of the page in the splashes of water, to highlight that he wants to be the centre of attention and directly links the name and image together. The page number has also been located in the middle of the page which is unusual as its normal layout is in the bottom corner. This emphasises his rebellious side as he has rearranged the traditional layout and made it is own.

Colours: The colour scheme for the two pages is mainly black and white, which makes it look sophisticated and highlights the splashes of water across the page. They have also incorporated blue within the main paragraph of text as the main connotation of blue is generally water. It is also a very masculine group of colours which relates to his personality. We can see what his personality is like through the image as he seems very rebellious and confident.

Main image: The image is of the main singer from the iconic band Florence and the Machine which takes up half of the double spread. This makes our attention drawn to her straight away, which then informs us about the rest of the article. We notice that she is sitting on an American flag which represents that the band are now worldwide as they are originally from the UK. This also links directly with the heading USA. She has a very informal pose and looks very relaxed, however also quite seductive to draw the reader into the article.

Colour: The background and the text colour are very bland and dont have much life to them. However, this then gives a better contrast against the red of Florence's hair and the red stripes in the flag. The red is representing love as this links with the heading got the love and she is showing her appreciation and love for America. Her fiery red hair is very fierce which gives her look an edge and gives a sense of danger to her appearance.

Headline: The headline USA got the love is symbolising how the band are now global and how they have conquered America. Got the love is a obvious link to one of the bands most well known songs Youve got the love which is used as a metaphor on the double spread, as they are expressing the love they have for their American supporters. Got the love is in a serif font which looks more sophisticated and feminine, compared to the bold sharp edges of USA. This highlights to the reader that they care about all of their fans and they do love the support they receive from all over the world. The serif font also links back to the main image of Florence and emphasises how she is very feminine, yet still a powerful woman in today's 21st century.
