Chapter 3 – PART 3
PV CELL CHARACTERISTICS
Effects of Temperature

• As the PV cell
temperature increases
above 25º C, the module
Vmp decreases by
approximately 0.5% per
degree C
Effects of Shading/Low Insolation

• As insolation decreases
amperage decreases
while voltage remains
roughly constant
Question
BP Solar SX 150B
Group Exercise
If the ambient temperature is 33˚C at
solar irradiance of 950 Wmˉ². Calculate:
1. Operating PV cell temperature
2. Short circuit current
3. Open circuit voltage
4. Maximum power output
Manufacturer Parameter
• Short Circuit Current = Isc
• Maximum Power = Pmax
• Open Circuit Voltage = Voc
• Normal Operating Cell Temperature = NOCT

Calculation processes of PV module
Example 1
A module formed by = 24 solar cells in series, under the
operating conditions G = 700 W/m2, and Ta = 34oC. The
manufacturer’s values under standard conditions are: I SC = 3 A;
VOC = 20.4 V; Pmax = 45.9 W; NOCT = 43oC. Determine the
parameters of:
1. Short-circuit current (ISC).
2. Solar cell temperature (TC).
3. Open-circuit voltage (VOC).
4. Fill factor (FF).
5. Maximum power point (Pmax).
Exercise 2
A module formed by 20 solar cells in series,
under the operating conditions G = 650
W/m2, and TC = 35oC. The manufacturer’s
