LAB 3 Title: Transformer Tests Using MATLAB/Simulink And Their Integration Into Undergraduate Electric Machinery Courses.
Background:
Transformer tests: There are various transformer tests some of them are as under: 1. Winding resistance test. 2. Primary test. 3. Open circuit test (Main concern) 4. Short circuit test. 5. Load test. Here we will discuss only about open circuit test.

Open circuit test:

Method:
The secondary of the transformer is left open-circuited. A wattmeter is connected to the primary. An ammeter is connected in series with the primary winding. A voltmeter is optional since the applied voltage is the same as the voltmeter reading. Rated voltage is applied at primary.

Matlab simulation:
We have to implement the following circuit.

The simulation will be taken out in some steps.

Step 1:

Step 2:

in this step we will take 1. 1 voltmeter 2. 2 ammeters

Step 3:

Step 4:

Step 5:

Step 6:
In this step unmark 3 windings option .

Step 7:
In this step two elements are used I. II. 1 Scope 3 displays

Step 9:

Step 10:

We will need 4 RMS signals

Step 11:

We will need power (phasor) for calculating real and apparent power.

Simulation results:

S.NO 1 2 3 4 5

Parameter Name Vrms (Primary) Irms (primary) Real power Reactive power Irms (secondary)

Value 2497 volts 0.478 A 172.5 1136 6.365e-021

From open circuit test : 1) Rc = Voc2/Poc

As Voc = 2497 volts Poc = 172.5 Watts So Rc becomes Rc= 6234009/172.5

Rc= 36144.97 Ohm Rc= 36.1K ohm

2) There are two components of current namely real current Icand imaginary current Im.
Ic = Voc / Rc =2497/36.1K =0.069A =69 mA Im= sqrt(Ioc2 - Ic2) = sqrt (0.0782 0.0692 ) =sqrt (0.000139 ) =0.0117 A 3) Xm = Voc/Im = 2497/ 0.472 = 5290.2

4) Power Factor = Poc/ Ioc*Voc

= 172.5 / 0.078*2497 =172.5/194.766 = 0.885 5) Y = Ioc/ Voc Y= 0.078/2497 Y= 0.0003

Conclusion:
This procedure assumes that all measurements weretaken on the Primary side of the transformer and hence the solution will give all values referred tothe Primary side of the transformer.
