 Buoyancy and Stability of Submerged bodies

BUOYANCY
• When a body is immersed in a fluid , an upward force is exerted by the fluid on
the body. This force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body
and is called force of buoyancy.
• Center of buoyancy: The point through which the force of buoyancy is
supposed to act is known as the center of buoyancy. The center of buoyancy
will be the center of gravity of the fluid displaced.
Meta-centre
META-CENTRE
• The point about which a body starts oscillating when the body is tilted by an
small angle.
• It may be also defined as the point at which the line of action of the force of
buoyancy will meet the normal axis of the body when the body is given a small
angular displacement.
• Meta-centric height: It is the distance between the meta-centre of floating
body and the centre of gravity of the body.
STABILITY OF SUB MERGED BODIES
• A sub-merged or floating body is said to stable if it comes back to its original
position after a slight disturbance.
• The position of centre of gravity and centre of buoyancy in case of a
completely sub-merged body are fixed.
• There are the following three cases,
FLOATING BODIES

Floating bodies are those which are totally out of the liquid but are in
contact with it
OR
When a body is partially immersed in a fluid (generally water), it is called
a floating body
STA BILITY OF FLOATING BODIES
Meta-centr

• The stability of a floating body is determined from the position of meta-centre.

• In case of floating the weight of the body is equal to the weight of liquid displaced.
