Taekwondo Martial Arts
Taekwondo
• Is a martial arts that originated in Korea.
• It is a dual sport that combines combat
and self-defense techniques with sport
and exercise.
• Training in taekwondo includes a system
of blocks, kicks, punches and open-
handed strikes. It also involves several
take-downs or sweeps, throws and joint
locks.
Taekwondo
• It is derived from the following Korean
words: tae which means “ to strike or
break with foot”, kwon which means “to
strike or break with first”, and do which
means “way”, “method”, or “path”.
• “the way of the foot and the hands”. It
emphasizes on high kicking and fast
hand technique.
Uniform
• A taekwondo student typically wears a
Dobok with a belt tied around the
waist.
• The belt’s color indicates the student’s
rank- the darker the color, the higher
the rank.
• Taekwondo is traditionally performed
in bare feet.
Training in Taekwondo
• Learning the technique of the sport
• Doing anaerobic and aerobic
workout, including stretching
exercises.
• Learning self defense techniques
• Learning the different patterns or
forms of movements
• Participation in sparring
• Practicing relaxation and meditation
exercises, including breathing control
• Learning the different throwing and/or
falling techniques
• Focusing on mental and ethical
discipline, respect, and self-confidence
• Learning the breaking techniques
A. Power breaking
- using straightforward techniques to
break as many boards as possible
B. Speed breaking
- putting special focus on the speed
required to break several boards
• C. Special techniques
- breaking fewer boards utilizing jumping
or flying techniques
• Taking exams to progress to the next rank
During of a Match
• The bouts are divided into three
rounds with each round lasting two
minutes. A one-minute interval
interval between each round is given
as a form of break
Rules and Scoring in Taekwondo
1. Hand and foot attacks to the head are
allowed
2. The use of the knee, pushing, holding,
hitting below the belt and hitting below the
belt and hitting an opponent when he/she is
on the floor are not allowed.
3. The competitor with more scoring
techniques wins at the end of two minutes
(or specified time)
4. Full-force blows are allowed.
5. A knockout results in a victory
6. The scoring system being observed are as
follows:
a. 1 point for :Punch or kick to the body
(inside the red or blue areas of the uniform)
b. 2 Points for : any punch to the head
c. 3 Points for: any kick to the head (direct
hit)
d. 4 Points for: any kick to the head
( spinning kick)
