HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
-Philippine Literature was interrupted in its
development when Japan conquered the Philippines
thus Literature in English came to a halt.

-Since most newspapers in English were stopped by the


Japanese, it turned writers into writing Filipino.
Then the Philippine Literature in
Tagalog was revived during this
period
between 1941-1945
Newspapers and magazine publications were re-

with Japanese Brutalities, of the
poverty of life under the
Japanese Government and the
Brave Guerilla Exploits
•Tagalog poetry acquired not only rhyme
but substance and meaning

•Short stories had better characters and


events based on facts and realities and
themes were more meaningful

•Novels became common but it is still read


by the people for recreation
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF POEM EMERGED
NAMELY:

•Haiku
•Tanaga
•Karaniwang Anyo
•Haiku
-made up of 17 syllables divided into three lines

-allegorical in meaning

-has a 5-7-5 syllable pattern


•Tanaga
-similar to the haiku

-has five-line poem

-with a 5-7-5-7-7 syllable pattern


•Karaniwang Anyo (Usual Form)
-like those mentioned earlier in the beginning
chapters of this book is usual in Common Form of
Poetry.
•Writings came journalistic in nature during this
period
•Filipinos had learned to express themselves more
confidently
•Gradually, as normality was restored, the tones and
themes of the writing turned to the less pressing
problems of economic survival
some Filipinos who
had gone abroad came
back to publish their
works.
